Samsung NX mini, a Top Infra-Red ILC for $125€

.
Here are 2 ways to get a used Samsung NX mini :
- NX-mini Kit w/ 9-27 ED OIS zoom lens + Ext. Flash : ~$150€ = the price of ~3 R72 Filters
- Body Only or with the 9mm ED Pancake lens : ~$100€ = the price of ~2 R72 Filters

The Kit gathers almost Everything interesting from Samsung for ~$150€...
the Ma4NxM adapter and the 17mm f/1.8 are Very Rare...

For the price of 2 / 3 R72, you'll be able to Avoid that R72 Filter, thus the Tripod + High ISO setting :

Exif : NX-mini, 9mm f/3.5 @ f/8, 1/558 sec. ISO 100

Yes, the Q, Q10's sensors are 44.4% More Sensitive :

For beginners, the Samsung NX mini have a lot of advantages :

+ NX-mini are easy to find at $100€ or less

+ NX-mini's IR-cut removal is 100% Fully Reversible

+ NX-mini's AF is still 100% Reliable after its IR-cut removal

with the IR-Cut in place + a R72 Filter you're restricted to High-ISO-Tripod :

+ NX-mini's Wider Sensor mounted on a 800 mm will cover Veil Nebula's 2 parts :

+ NX-mini can hold 240 seconds Bulb Exposures !

+ NX-mini's L.E.N.R. is Fully Cancelable !

+ NX-mini's Huge Battery will last a Winter-Night long !

+ NX-mini's Wired Remote Controlers are easy to find at $25€ or less

+ I'll add one page : How to add a T2-Mount-Thread M-42x0.75 for $25€ on your NX-mini
... this is crucial because Sam's MA4NXM Adapters are out of stock...

Here is the last Astrophotography I posted from that little Costless Camera.
it's not as sharp as I hoped : the 2nd Night, I got Huge Turbulence
Fine Colors, No Dark-frames, nor Bias-Maps subtracted :

The result of the 1st Night is 5 pictures before in my gallery :
Much Noisy, 13 subs instead of 24, but Sharp !

You'll get better pics with yours...

And just at the moment they reached the Top of the Best possible Image Quality !
That was an incredible surprise for everyone...

Sometimes... I think that Pentax, after their K-5's Big Success...
should have resumed its sensor supplies from Samsung
when their NX1 and NX500 reached DxoMark's top !

Instead of being forced by Nikon to settle for old Sony sensors...
... the Pentax K-1's sensor is the one of the D800E !
Imagine a K-1 w/ D850 sensor + Pixel-Shift...

Don't you think so ?

My last AstroPhoto : M-51 Whirlpool Galaxy
the Samsung NX mini mounted on a Sky-Watcher 254/1200 Newtonian
30 subs of 4 minutes each guided by Phd with a ToUcam

And the NX mini could achieve even Better Image Quality :
- here is a lot of Fixed Pattern Noise at 25° from the Vertical direction !
It couldn't be a problem from the imx183 sensor,
raw image noise due to electrical waves ?
Here is a 2000*2000 pixel M-51 :
Maxi Astro (Ciel Profond) au NX mini...
and more to read...

This in a well lit big city under the Full Moon !

It was also the very first time I used the NX mini under the ~Full Moon...
... and Without the Baader SkyGlow Filter, removed for a Q10 ISO 800 shooting !
So the Sky Background is way brighter than NX mini usual...

Here still the same 30 subs without any filter...

... or maybe the full Moonlight + the fact I did not mount the SkyGlow filter ?

Yesterday, the sky was filling with clouds as soon as the night became dark for Astro...
... I stacked the 29 subs remaining (1 trashed ) in Kappa-Sigma mode,
which is designed to minimise Out of Range pixels Effect

The result is less noisy, so less NR needed
M-51 (Ciel Profond) au NX mini...

For now, it's the best... isn't it ?

Samsung NX mini, a Top Infra-Red Astro-ILC for ~$125€~

.
The next Astro-Photography I built with the NX-mini was M-16...
= Eagle Nebula from 30 Raw files without Dark-Frames nor Bias-Maps
( I never need to subtract Dark-Frames nor Bias-Maps from the NX-mini Raw files ! )
.

.
The whole Story is explained here :
Maxi Astro (Ciel Profond) au NX mini...
.
This year, I submitted 4 Astro-Photographies to DPR Challenges :

-1. Messier 27 this Spring... was 6th in the "Samsung Challenge" :
Samsung NX mini, Top Infra-Red ILC for $125, #1
-> exactly this one !

-2. Messier 51 this Summer... was 4th in the "Surprise Me !" Challenge :
Samsung NX mini, Top Infra-Red ILC for $125, #6
-> a sister of that one, a desaturated and upside-down version !

-3. Messier 51 again... was 7th in the "PURPLE challenge" :
Samsung NX mini, Top Infra-Red ILC for $125, #7
-> that one, but slightly desaturated !

-4. Messier 16 a few days ago... was 11th in the "red challenge"
-> the one displayed in this Post !

Finally, not so bad for Astro-Photographies that are rather "Off-Topic" on Non-Astro Challenges !

For you that want to give the NX-mini a try in Astro-Photography... but...
... do not own or could not find a MA4NXM Adapter to connect the NX-mini to M48 / M42 T2 Mounts...
I find a very simple solution by Adding a M48 Mount Thread to the NX-mini as is !
+ another simple way to lower the M48 Mount Thread to M42,
So one can use the NX-mini with every instrument !

Samsung-NX-mini-M48-or-M42-Mount-Adapter

the NX-mini has so High Performances in (Very-) Low-Light, is so easy to upgrade to Full-Spectrum :

Samsung-NX-mini-TOP-Infra-Red-ILC

Sincerely hope this will help you to take an easy plunge for Astro-Photography !
( in Landscape IR-Photography, the NX mini will be a winner too )

Messier-20, Trifid Nebula = 50 Millions of Billions of kilometers away from Earth !
30 .SRW Raw-files stacked with DeepSkyStacker & finish Elements 3.
This is the Most difficult Astro-Photo built during the summer
- M-20 is only ~22 degrees over the horizon, some shots ending in the trees...
- that also means Maximum Light Pollution + Max Turbulence effects !
- Ambient Temp was ~25°C, had to Not over-use the LiveView...

Right Click + View image + Zoom to enlarge :

.
... Coming soon ?...
M-8, Lagoon Nebula is too big to fit inside the 1" frame
... then, I will try to build a fine picture of M-17, Omega Nebula...
Next Year 2020 guys, last time was way too dim :

Ladies, Gentlemen and Moon-Maids...
... here is the Image Quality one can get with a 1" BSI sensor !

I was somewhat helped by the Atmospheric Conditions : hazy and quiet...
- but the Colors - especially the Red and Blue - suffered a little
I couldn't get the amazing colors of the page top M27

The result is so detailed that I uploaded it in ~3000 x ~2000 pixels
-> you can watch the 3000 Pixels Wide Picture here :
Maxi Astro (Ciel Profond) au NX mini...
and also there :
M27, seen as if you were close : Digital Photography Review

= 30 .SRW Stacked, then Levels Push w/ Elements.3
Right-Click + View-Image + F11 to watch...
a half-sized preview of M27
.

.
Enjoy !

Thanks @geo444. This NX-Mini is quite an eye opener. I bought mine used with a kit lens for a good price and it surpasses my expectations. Can not wait to try it adapted on a telescope.

Hi 2old4toys !
Thanks to you to buy one...
I sometimes feel like an Alien being alone using my ~$125€~ Selfie-Camera for Astro-Photography !

The NX-mini challenged me seing the Results of the Canon G7X
Early 2015 : the Highest Rated Canon APS-C camera got a... 1 inch Sensor !
that made me jump out to get a used NX-mini ASAP :
Camera Sensor Comparison Tools
.

.
The 1 inch BSI sensor is ~1/3 of the area of an APS-C sensor...
... but its Sports Score is only ~1/2 of the Eos 7D-II's !
.

Can't wait to see your Results

Here is the last Advantage of this little costless Selfie Camera...
it seems that its Amp-Glow is better managed by Samsung than by Zwo for its Astro-cams...
especially when looking at C.Buil's results :
www.astrosurf.com/buil/asi183mm
/!\ 180° rotated sample
.

.
Terrible Weather Conditions forced me to lower my Usual Exposure Duration from 4 min. down to 30 sec.
... so I had to push the ISO setting up to ISO-800
One can see the Amp-Glow localised to the Lower Corners of the Frame
- Ambient Temperature was at ~10~11°C
Huge Turbulence, hence the Score...
~80~90 km/h wind gusts !

But the Sky Back-Ground Lightness w/ SkyGlow filter is only reaching 4.86% !
... this from inside a Big City at Sea-Side with Huge Light Pollution :
Astronomie et Conditions d'Astronomie
= How to Trash citizen's money in Lighting the Sky !

Finally, these 30 sec. subs were not parts of the final picture...
that was buit from the better 4 min. subs at ISO-100
the whole looong story of M-42 starts here
Maxi Astro (DSSO) au NX mini

the Full-Size 2640×1808 picture :
