Panasonic Lumix DC-S1R review: Digital Photography Review

The Panasonic Lumix DC-S1R is an impressively well-built full-frame mirrorless camera with lots of resolution, well thought-out controls and ergonomics and competitive video quality. Unfortunately its burst shooting speeds are simply outdone by the competition and for less money, and it falls slightly behind in overall image quality and autofocus performance as well. But the fact remains that the S1R is enjoyable to use and is worth a look for those that want a well-rounded high-resolution professional camera.

Panasonic still has a lot of work to do, but they are really close. Its a first generation product, so some of this is to be expected.

Love the look of the ergonomics. I wonder if they can carve out enough of a niche given the contracting market. I'd definitely take one of these over a Sony just for the manual controls, but then again these cameras are too rich for my blood regardless.

You can buy three Pentax K1 for the price of a Panasonic S1R, and I am not sure if anyone will see a difference between an S1R exposure and one from a Pentax K1. Pentaxians complain about lenses for the Pentax K1 and K1 II, but for the S1R it is much worse, there is not even a 150-450 , 15-30 and not even a macro lens.

Nothing as long as 150-450 at present, but offerings do include 20mm and 24mm lenses, both curiously absent for FF Pentax-K. Probably the strongest criticism of L-mount optics at present might be price, though multiple Sigma L-mount lenses are offered at attractive price points.

Panasonic (and M43 in general) are quite similar in many ways to Pentax. They build very well layed out camera's. Plenty of us use both. It's mainly the cost of the S1 line that has put me off.

I think I'll stick with my K1 for FF use. I got mine barely used for 1/6th the price of an S1R. That's a heck of a lot of money for the convenience of an EVF.

Yeah. I like the look, ergonomics, size, controls, and build quality. Panasonic needs to be faster in terms of frame/buffer and AF. The image quality of any modern camera is more than good enough for professional use. Even m4/3 is good enough for most professionals.

Also Sigma has a mount-swap policy that should be in play for the L mount soon. I presume it's soon, could be already active?

Edit: ah they have a MC-21 adapter, perhaps the length difference makes a straight conversion messy.
