$$$ony loses major client.

Samsung has secured the supply of sensors for the fourth largest smartphone maker.

XIAOMI will use Samsung sensors in all future new smartphones.

Of course the existing models will still use Sony sensors.

Samsung bought the first BSI sensor to ILCs back in the dim dark ages,My guess, is its a matter of time till they get their sensors into another system.

What was the justification provided by XIAOMI? Seems like performance or cost may not have been the only factors in the decision.

It's also not clear whether it means XIAOMI will now simply add Samsung sensors into their evolving product mix, alongside Sony, or rely on Samsung image sensors exclusively in future for their new phones. If it's exclusive sourcing, that may be a big deal, esp if other Chinese manufacturers then do the same.

Well, not only do Xiaomi make lots of phones.

They actually make a few cameras as well, mostly small sensors action type stuff, dash cams, security cams.

However, they do have an arm that makes ILCs....YI,the Leica of China(lmao)...it's a m43 mount that's got a nice Sony sensor. Not a great camera but it did come with a couple of lenses.

When Samsung were growing fast internationally, say 15-10 years ago, they did it by being a great value proposition - reaaly good products at below like for like competition's prices - I reckon they could easily play the same hand with their sensors

A couple of years ago,Samy said they wanted to sell their sensors, meaning they wanted a slice of Sony's pie...so this is the first significant step.

Sony likes to keep the best sensors for themselves.

Seems silly. Diffraction would surely set in at 30-ish megapixels on a phone sensor, even wide open at f1.8.

The camera trade-offs are too complicated / not interesting for a lot of people who just buy into marketing claims. It's just that for the majority of people not as experts as in this Pentax forum sites. That's how Huawei was so successful by showing images taken with a DSLR to promote the image quality of their phones. Xiami now does the same. A number of claims are also made by camera companies which never happen to be of real value in practice, mirrorless is one of them, but there are enough claims to increase sales overall.

But but but the Throat Diameter!!. And the FLANGE DISTANCE!!! Don't you know that the Pentax mount is utterly, completely, totally incapable of even servicing a 5 MP 1" sensor from 2005?

I didn't know that. I cleaned my sensor a few month ago by enabling the option in the menus to lock the mirror up. And it worked just fine.

Indeed. Step up all those naysayers who vociferously claimed the K-mount was incompatible with a full frame IBIS system, before the K-1 proved them wrong.
