Ransomware vulnerability on Canon cameras (that we know)

There's a vulnerability on the PTP protocol, which can be exploited with no user input and brick your camera, and most importantly, encrypt your photos. Canon has already patched the issue, but we don't actually know if the rest of brands are safe, or there is more vulnerabilities about this same thing, so for now, friendly reminder to keep you cameras updated to the last firmware version, and don't enable the WiFi as long as you aren't using it, just enable, use, disable.

This is the source: Say Cheese: Ransomware-ing a DSLR Camera - Check Point Research

There may be more brands affected, but we don't really know yet. I do know that PTP wotks as an unecrypted protocol that supports firmware upgrade without user confirmation, so....ew

There is already an active thread on this topic in the General Photography area...

Hacking camera firmware to plant ransomware - PentaxForums.com

FWIW, the PTP protocol is fine, it is Canon's implementation and general firmware security that is faulted. If Canon developed a patch, it has not been publicly offered, though they have posted a general security advisory (https://global.canon/en/support/security/d-camera.html)
