Nikon to Announce APS-C Mirrorless

Reported from PetaPixel:

The Z50 will allegedly feature a 20MP APS-C sensor based on the Nikon D500 DSLR, boasts 11fps continuous shooting, 4K video capability, a 3-inch flip-down touchscreen LCD for selfies, a single SD card slot, no IBIS, and a price tag of around $1,000 for the body-only or about $1,200 in a kit with a new Nikkor Z 16-55mm f/3.5-6.3 lens designed specifically for APS-C sensors.

...announcement on October 10th.

So just after the nice conversation about APS-C-optimized mounts, Nikon says that crop Z mount is their way to go. Also please don't buy Canon M series.

Around 1000 for body only with imaging and (presumably) AF/action performance similar to a D500 is interesting, if people are willing to go mirrorless and deal with the inevitably cheapy build quality...

Interesting. The lack of IBIS is a downer, though.

You are better served with a D7500.

Yes, Nikon is acting a bit flustered now. Sony and Canon have the lead in MILC, and Nikon has decided that they need to catch up. With the rumored reduction in the overdue reduction in the types of "APS-C" bodies they sell, Nikon may be in the middle of remaking the company while still keeping their world position in cameras. we do live in interesting times.

For sure. Nikon are doing a pretty good job at releasing Z mount lenses and firmware update for the Z bodies. If Nikon continue at the current pace, the Z system will be a good choice by 2021.

I do find that as a consumer, I would rather have Nikon strategy of using one z-mount for both crop and FF much better than the separate mounts of Canon mirrorless. I feel like ef-m-mount is going to be a dead mount in the future similar to Nikon 1 mount. Nikon put a lot of resources into small consumer cameras (nikon 1 and keymission and the 1" compact line that was never release) when that market dropped off the face of the earth. There must be a lot of regret about that decision.

Without IBIS, kit lenses that slow, and those prices, the new Nikon doesn't interest me at all.
I better save money for the new Pentax flagship.

I totally agree. Canon may have made a mistake to not have the same mount for their apsc and full frame mirrorless systems. Using the same Z mount for apsc and full frame is a good thing.

So they should have killed the EF-M mount? There's no way they will do that when the EOS M50 was the most sold MILC in Japan a year ago or so (going from memory here, I might be wrong).

EDIT: in any case, neither Canon nor Nikon have ever given a serious thought to their crop lens selection beyond an assortment of kit-like and consumer grade options.
Canon has what, the 24mm 2.8 pancake, the 17-55/2.8 zoom and the various superzooms/kits/two tele options (50-200 and 70-300? Is the 70-300 FF?) both with 4-5.6 aperture?

At least in Z-mount you can use full frame lenses like the 50 f1.8 and 35mm 1.8 even if you are crop.

Canon has been making the EF/EF-M adapter since they started making the M mirrorless cameras right? Sure, it's an adapter, but it should work well enough. I also don't see the point of getting a Z50 just to slap FX-Z Lenses to it. At least the M series has small lenses.
