Canon shifting their focus on intoducing mirrorless glass rather than DSLR glass

Read an interesting article that indicates Canon is shifting their focus on introducing Mirrorless glass rather than DSLR glass.

Yes, they just introduced a new top of the line pro DSLR, but apparently Mirrorless is their new emphasis. Questions that pop into my mind, is it that they already have just about every lens you can imagine in their DSLR line and it's simply a case of bringing their Mirrorless glass line up to the DSLR levels ?

Or has the bell tolled for the Canon DSLR and this is becoming the start of a long term shift out of DSLR and into Mirrorless ?

As a national newspaper used to say...enquiring minds need to know....and that is the phrase they used.

Canon announces it?s focusing on mirrorless lenses until the market demands more DSLR glass | Popular Photography

They'll also have to design larger batteries for their cameras. Mirrorless drains batteries twice as fast. A reviewer of GFX50 says that he carries 6 spare batteries for a day of shooting in winter, and regularly drain 4 of them in one day of outdoor shooting.

Canon has stopped research and development efforts for new EF lenses? Run for the hills! The sky is going to fall! Canon is doomed...

Quite possibly. Anyone know of an omission simply screaming to be added to the EF lineup? Oh wait, there'll be some "equivalent" missing...

Will have to wait and see how this pans out. Does it mean just ef-r or will ef-m get a little more love? A bigger surprise would have been an announcement that they were stopping production of dslr glass - not going to happen any time soon.

From where I am sitting, it's straight forward to "design" an RF lens. Just take the existing EF design, add a bit of plumbing at the rear to get the flange distance right, call it good, work up the required packaging and start shipping. Canon will probably deny this.

If Canon is like Pentax was, there could be a rather large inventory of unsold Canon EF lenses in their supply chain. The process of manufacturing lenses hasn't changed, so as long as there are a few employees still with Canon who know how to manufacture lenses (in any of Canon's mounts), production of specific products can be stopped or restarted at any time.

What Richard Shepherd, pro product marketing senior manager at Canon Europe, actually said in an interview for Digital Camera World, which was referenced in the Popular Photography article linked above is "launching more RF lenses while still fully supporting the EF lens system. And of course, should the market demand it, we are ready to create new EF lenses. But for now, our focus is on RF." In other words, you are correct when you say

None of the current EF-M and RF lenses have been designed that way. They were all designed from scratch, taking advantage of the shorter register and, sometimes, fresh ideas (e.g. apodisation coating for the RF 85mm f/1.2L USM DS or outer zooming for the RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM).

This isn't the first time that Canon has orphaned a mount and unfortunately, it probably won't be the last...

Why would they do this? How would be better than just using EF lens with an adapter?

I have a '70's Canon F1 and a '79 Pentax K1000.

I'm not a Canon aficionado, but I have wondered how out of date, the lens mount on my F1 with it's standard Canon 50m F 1.8 FD lens is currently. I don't how many times Canon has come out with a different lens mount in the past 50 years or so.

The K1000 meanwhile has a K mount.

Writing has been on the wall for a couple of years. Unless Canon can come up with a hybrid OVF that can bring the accuracy and speed of mirrorless to the DSLR, the DSLR is going to fall behind mirrorless in market share. The OVF and mirror are the problem when it comes to moving the technology forward. People my have personal and subjective opinions about the user experience of the OVF/EVF, but as far as advancing camera technology and opening up more option for photography the OVF is a limitation.

The new 20mp should get the Dslr up there,it's but a forerunner of the 2024 M/L speedster though!

They haven't left the mount,if the demands there they will supply.

It's vastly different to the FD to EF transition.

Did they not say this when there was first RF lenses coming out? They said about it being optimum? And there is also a fact that RF is as we speak quite limited. This only tell that they are putting full effort on that format and people investing to that can have peaceful mind while they are sending out their money business.

Canon currently has 96 (!) original Canon EF/EF-S DSLR lenses in the best and most complete lens portfolio of any manufacturer.

And a paltry 10 RF FF DSLM lenses (plus 11 EF-M lenses).

Sony has 32 FF DSLM lenses.

Unless they want to kill off their R system right away they simply have to focus on RF-glass in the medium term.
