Nikon 8008 opinions?

A friend mentioned having a Nikon 8008 he wants to get rid of. I'm starting to read up on it and it sounds like a pretty impressive camera. Any opinions on it?

A milestone, a dream in 1990 or so. High eye point finder, matrix metering, 1/8000s shutter, 1/250s sync. The later S Version added spot metering. In build motor drive. A milestone still worth playing with today.
I used the S version and it was a new class of camera for Nikon. Lots of electronics, so I am not sure how well it will still function today.

Hello,

From what I understand VR lens stabilization does not work with it. I have a non working body missing battery holder and battery door I was given to try to revive. Personally I find it a bit big and clunky but that's just me. It should be a very capable body as long as it is working properly. Of course lens selection will be the determining factor in image quality.

Thanks,

I’d rather use a PZ-1, but the 8008 was a solid camera.

N90 is nicer, though, and the 6006 is a smaller form factor...

And they’re pretty cheap now, too, iirc...

N90 was the next evolution after N8008 aka F801. The 8008 is more original as a milestone, the first serious AF camera from Nikon after Canon released the EOS system (forget N5005/F501). The 6006 came later and is no match. If you want even more fun for low price get an F4 with small hand grip. Many manual features, easy replacement of viewfinder and focus screen.

I can remember the photography press making a huge deal of the 1/8000 second shutter speed when it came out. Quite a milestone. If it is in good working condition and the price is right, you know what you have to do...

Hah! I actually LOLd.

Thanks all for your opinions. The body is almost worthless (which is kind of a shame), the lenses, well, that's another story. Going tomorrow to see what he has. I don't think he's looking to make max $$ but neither will he give everything away. Hoping we can strike a fair deal. I don't need another camera but I MIGHT NEED THIS CAMERA.

Picked up the camera today. I only wanted the 8008 and a couple of lenses, but he said "You take one, you take it all." So for the princely sum of $100 I got this:

That's the 8008, along with a 4004s, four lenses (50/1.4, 38-85, 35-135, 70-210), an extra strap, a few filters, lens hoods, cleaning stuff, a nice camera bag, plus two rolls of Kodachrome! Missing from the photo is an SB-24 Speedlight flash.

Both cameras and the flash have had batteries inside them for the 28 years since they were put away. The 8008 cleaned up easy and is working just fine! The 4004s is a bit more of a mess, and will require some more TLC if I want to get it working. Aside from the 4004s, cosmetically everything is in lovely shape.

Can you believe I got all this for a hundred bucks???

Do we live in the Golden Age, or what?
