Just to clarify this - I'm talking about the FDn (or nFD if you prefer) lens mount, which in my experience wasn't nearly as good as the earlier FD/FL breech lock - simply because the breech lock was a LOT stronger and harder to damage. While the adoption of it coincided with the use of more plastics in Canon lenses, I've never had any particularly bad experiences with that side of things - most of my current lenses (for Canon, Nikon, Pentax etc. are made of it, and while I've seen an occasional broken plastic lens flange (usually Minolta, but also Canon and Nikon) I wouldn't describe it as a particular problem. But the basic problem was that Canon changed the design of a lot of their lenses when they introduced the new mount, and some of the modified designs simply weren't as good as their predecessors - I think they rushed things a bit and made some bad choices.

By comparison the switch to EF was done with a lot more care, and seemed to go better overall.
