Sony A7rII falls into my lap...

I current own a lot of nice lenses for Pentax, some are FF capable, some are mostly FF, some are not FF at all. I tried the K-1 and really didn't love the size and the bulk of the f2.8 zooms, but the IQ was very good. I ended up just sticking with my K-3. I also have a modest collection of m43 and my Dad is giving me his m43 gear since he is too old and doesn't want to carry anything more than the Sony RX100 mk III he has been using.

So Dad is a master at trading things and worked out getting a Sony A7rII recently in trade for a .380 pistol and some cash. It's going to be my Xmas and Birthday gift he says... . The body is in pristine condition, previous owner upgraded to the A7rIV and used this only in his studio. The body does not come with a lens.

So now what???? Obviously the new AF K to E mount adapter is of interest as is even a passive adapter for reuse of k mount gear on the Sony.

I'm in a bit of a dilemma. I like m43 for size, particularly when travelling. However I don't really want to maintain three lines of gear on top of what I have. Obviously I'll make my own decisions but I'm looking for input on what YOU might do if you had similar situation and interests in photography. I'm going to list my gear below in general - I may leave a bit out as this is off the top of my head:

Pentax Gear:
K-3 Body

Crop ONLY AF Zooms (** very limited range semi-ff coverage)
10-17 (SMC)
12-24 (SMC)**
16-50 (Screw Drive Converted)
18-50 (DAL)
18-135
20-40**
50-135
55-300 (DA SMC non-WR non-PLM) (Unclear what if any FF coverage this offers)

Full Frame Coverage AF Zooms:
60-250 (I have a baffle for it - just have not made the plunge to install it to reduce ff vignetting)**
F or FA 70-210 f4-5.6 (I don't remember which!)

DA ONLY AF Primes:
14
15 (SMC)

Full Frame AF Primes (* or nearly FF)
FA Ltd 31
DA Ltd 40 *
F 50 f1.7
FA 50 f1.4
DA* 55 *
DA Ltd 70 (HD) *
FA Ltd 77
DFA 100 Macro WR
DA* 200
FA* 300*

MF FF Primes:
Takumar Bayonet 135 2.5
a few more 50mm's
Tokina 35-70 f3.5-5.6

MF Crop Primes:
8mm Rokinon Fisheye (Non-removable hood)

m43 Bodies:
Panasonic GX1, GX7, GX8
Olympus EM1 mk1
Olympus Air-01

m43 Zooms:
Panasonic 12-32 f3.5-5.6
Panasonic 12-35 f/2.8
Panasonic 14-42 PZ f3.5-5.6
Panasonic 35-100 f4-5.6
Panasonic 45-175 f4-5.6

m43 Primes:
Panasonic 20mm f1.7
Sigma Art 30mm f2.8
Panasonic 42.5mm f1.7
Olympus 60mm Macro f2.8

m43 "toy lens":
Olympus 9mm Fisheye Body Cap Lens

m43 Adapters:
Pentax DA to m43
Canon FD to m43 (no FD lenses to speak of right now)

So what would you do? What would you change? Selling the A7rII isn't an option right away is not an option - but in the longer term it could be on the table. I need to try it to show my Dad I appreciate the effort he is making on this.

First thing is wait for the new adapter, apparently is not far away.you have enough glass to get started.Pehaps buy some other cheap F/FA glass too.

Sony,Tamron,Sigma can fill in the gap$

Owning the A7RII doesn't mean you have to maintain an additional line of gear (batteries aside, perhaps). Although my own A7II (paired with the LA-EA4 adapter) sometimes acts as a backup body for my A-mount Hasselblad HV, the vast majority of the time I use it for adapting older manual glass from a variety of mounts, but especially M42 and K-mount (some of which I previously used with my K-3). As I've stated before in these forums - and I mention it in my signature - I don't own a single native E-mount lens.

With a couple of inexpensive mount adapters for your incoming A7RII, you'll have an incredibly capable manual focusing, vintage lens platform. I realise the last thing you need is more glass - given the wonderful collection you already own - but it's great to be able to use older full frame lenses without cropping to APS-C format, and to nail focus every time without guesswork.

Since you'll be keeping the camera for a respectable period out of courtesy to your generous Dad, I'd really encourage you to try adapting at least your existing manual focus lenses. I think you'll enjoy it. If not, at least you'll know If, once you've tried it, you decide it's not for you, I'd be tempted to suggest selling it and buying a K-1 or K-1II as an additional body to enjoy with your existing full frame K-mount glass (no need to buy the big, heavy f/2.8 zooms or latest fast aperture primes unless you particularly want to)...

I will let off 2 older panasonic and the older olympus m43, leaving the GX8.
Newer m43 is cheap nowadays and more capable.
The Sony is a good camera for using different lens

make the A7 your fully-manual body - buy a couple of adapters and explore M42, MD, C/Y (etc) lenses....

+1 for trying some manual focus action on it. It’s what my A7iii does 97% of the time and it’s great for it.

Great input so far folks. I really appreciate it. I'm leaning towards the direction you mentioned. I'm kicking myself now for selling off some pristine Canon FD lenses (85 1.8 SSC, 200 2.8 SSC... )

I KNOW I have loads of great glass. I was lucky, I had Pentax connections for some of it, and a friend selling off gave me some crazy deals, but also the marketplace here was a great source. The largest reason for the size of both collections is that my father initially was shooting Pentax also and we avoided duplication and shared our collections. Then as he wanted to downsize his equipment, he got into m43, and I had to add some as well to advise him. Again we avoided duplication, but I also got all the Pentax gear. Then m43 was too complicated and more than he wanted to fuss with anymore. Eventually he moved to a Sony RX100... so the m43 gear moved into my collection. Some of the m43 gear is still with him, but soon he will live with me and my family here, and the collection will be easily shared if he changes his mind. Including, "my" a7rII... LOL. if it isn't clear my dad is a gear freak.

In any case, I'm looking forward to seeing how the Sony works on all the k mount glass.

Your comment is very timely. I just ordered (waiting for delivery) an A7 (MK1), plus I ordered adapters from B&H. I have two dozen M42 and K mount MF lenses. I bought a Panasonic GM1 (MFT) a few months ago, and love the small size for a walk around package. Like you, I have a K-3 with AF glass, but the increased bulk of a K-1 and AF lenses doesn't interest me.

I ordered the A7 for no other reason than to play with my MF lenses. If I decide I really like FF, then I might invest in a K-1 down the road.

Get into some videography, take advantage of features that Pentax just can't compete with and do something new.

Its a great "tiny" camera. The 12/32 and 35/100 panasonic lenses work really well in good light.Plus the 20mmf1.7 is a great little lens that suits it.

I really dislike video in general. But thanks for the idea.

I think it would take me months to sort out what I would do in your situation. I'm probably slower than most other folks here, but it takes me a while to not only learn the gear I have but also how much I enjoy using it.

Your dad seems pretty great!

He is a good egg. I'm trying to form a plan and now he tells me he also got a Sony FE 85 f1.8 and the Sony FE 28 f2...
