Sony A1 IBIS: up to 5 second wait time for it to be functional

QuoteQuote:
You can clearly see in my original comparison with my A7III, the A1 often takes up to 5 seconds or more to stabilize, where other Alpha bodies don't (A7III, A7RIV, A9, A7sIII at least):

They were what I would consider normal operation for a event photographer or photojournalist. This issue will appear after you lift your camera from pointing down or have your camera hanging on a strap then shoot either photos or start a video clip in any of the photo modes.

I received my replacement A1 from Sony today. The first thing I did was compare the IBIS with my original A1 by repeating the same 6 shots on both bodies. With this I can now confirm that ALL A1 bodies in general have this problem with the IBIS delayed engagement:

That's an action camera. Just wait 5 seconds and be ready to shoot.*

*= unless you happen to shoot with the sun in your back. Then you might loose the viewfinder functionality as well: Sony A1 Announced - Page 4 - PentaxForums.com

Pretty grim for a 7200 EUR camera body.

That is disappointing indeed, something that will always be annoying in practical use.

Looks more like a simple firmware issue to me. Another mountain out of a molehill.

That would suck. I hope it’s simple for them to fix via firmware, but there’s always the chance it is more complex than that.

A future firmware will take care of that.

One hopes. But there could be technical limitations and changes to the mechanism that could make it unable to be corrected that way.

Sony has a sad track record of fixing things in firmware. "firmware update" was the fans' hope when the lossy raw problem on A7's was discovered as well. It never was fixed in the cameras where it was initially found.

And the problem with IBIS is now 2 months old already. But having hope is good.

The A1 viewfinder blackout problem does sound even less likely to be solved in software only, though.

Pretty awful, but the issue also seems to limited to certain A1 + lens combinations.

I know of several folks who shoot the A1 + 200-600 or 600/4 who have no problems.

Issue is smaller than a mountain, larger than a molehill IMO.

Yeah, those are optically stabilized lenses, so they would not see any ibis issues with those lenses.

Just kind of a raw deal to have an expensive camera with IBIS that doesn't quite work, but as you say, you can just buy optically stabilized lenses -- not really an option for Pentaxians if their IBIS doesn't work.

Here's a PetaPixel article - including a video - about it: The Sony Alpha 1 Has An Experience-Breaking IBIS Error: Report | PetaPixel

QuoteQuote:
{Jamieson Dean} explains that through a Sony Alpha 1 Facebook group as well as comments on his video, he can confirm that the problem affects multiple users. That said, it doesn’t seem as though it affects every Alpha 1 and as a result, he cannot confirm how widespread the issue actually is. PetaPixel can confirm that it did not experience this issue with its Alpha 1 review unit, but that does not mean the issue doesn’t exist.
