Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1

Announced by Sony in 2005.
It featured a 10.3 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor (21.5 × 14.4 mm) and a 14.3–71.5 mm Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* lens, providing for an angle of view equivalent to 24–120 mm on a full frame camera.
(Wikipedia)

Although it was slow in operation (storing on CF card), I liked this camera a lot, especially because of its great lens. It stopped focusing at the end of 2019 and it was unrepairable.

What a shame it died. There are a number of newer cameras with quality zooms attached, did you ever replace it?

Not by such a fixed lens bridge camera but I use old K100D + SMC Pentax-DA 16-45mm F4 to achieve a roughly similar picture style.
DA 16-85 would be even better but it's not compatible with the the old body.

The k100d Super uses the same sensor and does support the 16-85 just in case that’s of interest.

I remember lusting after this camera back when I bought my first digital compact but it was way, way out of my price range.

My first digital camera was a similar all-in-one Sony. I had the DSC-F707. Even though its shape was a bit odd, I loved that camera. It took great pics. I only replaced it because the front section of the lens started falling apart.

@UncleVanya: Thanks. To get a 10 MPix sensor (like this DSC-R1), K200D and K10D with (with updated firmware) are DA 16-85 compatible options too.
@tonezime Thanks for the link. While it was a great camera model, I'll probably stick with Pentax bodies. I also hope in finding an interesting K-mount modified Carl Zeiss lens.
@Jonathan Mac I can understand why.
@TaoMaas Sony had some really unusual models in the past.

I'm adding some more Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1 samples I've just picked. Enjoy!

I noticed one of these for sale near me for €110. Still not cheap enough to buy as a camera to play with but a statement to how much they were valued.

Thanks a lot for that but I don't have this camera anymore. Looks like a more common problem of this lens so maybe someone else could use your research?

I second that. It's worth the price. But keep in mind that the camera is really slow in operation, especially when shooting RAW+JPEG.

DSC R1 - SOOC jpeg with "Vivid" image tone. I actually used it all the time, the "Standard" tone looked a bit dull to me. Photographed 2016/10.

Great camera by all measures. I've always liked the output I've seen from it and have looked for it a few times, but usually the prices have always seemed high on them. I guess people hold on to them because it take such great pictures.

I had a "similar vintage" Sony DSC-P200, also with a Carl Zeiss-branded lens, but it was a compact with a smaller but not tiny sensor (1/1.8"). It was also CCD, not CMOS. Its pictures still hold up to this day, in good light of course.

Had one for a while…was actually my first real digital camera investment. What a lens! The small lcd screen was also unique because one could move it into different angles including looking straight down at the camera. Was not using it for a while and then last year decided to sell it with the dedicated Sony flash unit. Got a buyer…gone. DP had a detailed retro look at it a couple of years ago. Owning it made me ready for the K1…both are big in size.
