Canon R Crop Sensor

I happened to run across an ad for the Canon EOS R7 and R10 crop sensor cameras. I'm not considering mirrorless but in thinking about getting a K3 iii for bird photography then looking at the specs and focusing ability of these Canons at current prices I have to say they're pretty impressive. The R7 and 100-500 looks like quite the combo.

Really like my Pentax gear handling and image quality and build, but I can see why Canon is competitive. Not sure about relative image quality but from what I saw it's pretty good.

My two cents. Would be tempting to pick one up with a kit lens to try it out. Like the OVF priority of Pentax but not having tried mirrorless might be interesting.

For AF I suspect that any current mirrorless model would run rings around any Pentax DSLR, and if that's your number one priority then it might be enough to make the decision. There are lots of other aspects of camera design and capabilities to take into account though.

AF is better/easier, sensor image quality and build is worse in my opinion, but I don't have the latest K3-3.

I don't expect the R7 or R6 can match up with the overall imaging results of the K3III. The Pentax should have more dynamic range and better low-light performance. Focus-wise with certain subjects, perhaps a dog running free in a field or in the ubiquitous drunk bicyclist test, the Canon's probably get a somewhat better hit rate even if not perfect. In general, and certainly for most scenarios, I believe the K3III focus system will hold its own.

My K3III matches up well (and exceeds it in some areas) with the supposed king of APSC birding cameras, the D500, and I wouldn't expect lesser results if including the R6 or R7 in the comparison.

That said Biff, if you have the spare cash and don't mind taking a little loss on reselling it needed, you could take one for the team.

Thanks. I'm planning on the K3 iii. Hard to match Pentax in image quality and overall experience, at least from my experience. I had been looking at D500s, even bought one, but sold it, going with K3 iii (then just saw a great K1 II/28-105 deal on Amazon. Dang. . . ). Want a crop sensor for main use on my 150-450.
