The Canon 7D for $1699.

Canon EOS 7D Hands-on Preview: 1. Introduction: Digital Photography Review

Oh my god this is a beast...

... Of course the only real added benefits from the K-7 is EXTRA WEIGHT (more like a con), +3 fps, 19AF points, 4 extra MP, and 1080p movie recording.

I really think Canon hit the spot with this one. It's actually the SAME price as the D300s! Shows that Canon still is the leader in imaging.
What do you guys think?
I think they went overkill on the MP now that I think about it. They should of stuck with 15mp.

Or not. There are some sample images from a pre-production model and even ISO 1600 looks great... Darn you Canon! :-D

$1700 and the Nikon D300s is $1800... I think nikon has to rethink the D300s just a tad!

I think this one will beat the crap out of the Nikon D300s. Luckily it's not in the same price range of K-7

Yeah but now Pentax really needs to make something to compete above this market. AS IN FULL FRAME. Other wise Pentax is gonna get in a lot of trouble...

I'll sell off my DA* 50-135mm when the time comes... But that will be years. When will I get that type of money? The answer is not for the next 10 years. I guess I will have to live with APS-C for 10 more years! :-D I love it so far.

Canon EOS 7D Digital Camera - Hands-On Preview - The Imaging Resource!

The largest preview I have seen so far.

Going back to read it now.

I dont see why a new aps-c camera would pressure pentax to make FF.
Am disappointed with the 7D, one cause its not FF, if it was and was a replacement for the 50D then that would move FF down one ladder in the segments.
Second its aps-c 18 megapixels, which in worst case could lead to nikon answering to it and in turn pentax increasing the resolution beyond 14.6mp which would be very bad

Look at the samples at Imaging Resouce. Outstanding results from 18MPx, clean and with very fine detail. It beats K7 hands down. It shows, that there is still plenty of headroom for sticking more MPx on APS-C chip.
Unfortunately it still has two big drawbacks, does not have in-body stabilization for my M42s and they are going to sell it with wrong lens mount

Interesting stuff with their AF system - looking forward to hearing something about it's real world performance.

I've been studying the High ISO performance (at Imaging-Res), compared to the K20D (as that's what I have) and at first when you only compare noise, it looks 2-3 stops better, but when you look closely the lack of details in the 7D images is pronounced, and the 7D really doesn't have much over the K20D.

I'll have to look close, but doesn't seem to be the High ISO APS-C camera some of us are waiting for...

(edit: I was wrong, without noise reduction the 7D rocks!)

If you haven't yet, take a look at the shots where Noise Reduction was off. Quite impressive. The standard NR shots do look smudgy at high ISO, but with NR disabled detail is retained while noise is very acceptable and easily cleaned up. I didn't expect Canon to be able to pull it off, but they've conjured up some magic it seems.

I'm not agreed. Difraction is the concomitant of 7D. It's hard to use f8.
Smaller pixel = worse colours.

Pentax's been in lot of trouble for years now, and they did not give a sh*t. Still we shoot it since it has remarkable glass and remarkable bodies in terms of features/handling for price...

I hope for quality FF camera from Pentax too, but hey I guess they still arent amused, 7D or not.

Bah.

Wow, just had a look at the studio shot. K20D 1600 ISO has more noise then the 7D at 6400 ISO, with details about the same. And I think the 7D shot will be easier to clean.

This may actually everything I hoped the K7 would be. I've been considering Nikon a few times, but never Canon...

This camera strikes me as something of a specialty item though no doubt some features will work their way down to models lower in the ranges. Perhaps it is primarily for those who want to shoot wildlife and birds while obtaining images that are the nearest thing to a full frame but taking advantage of the smaller telephoto lenses that the crop-sensor effect offers? I expect this is a great camera but if you don't need all the bells and whistles there is much better value on offer from cameras a level or two down, like the k7. At any rate, I don't think there is any need for Pentax to respond. All this new Canon means is that over the next couple of years, "regular" cameras at half the price will be able to offer improved and tweaked crop sensors.
