The lens and sensor are in one package? That's crazy. I think it's a dumb idea. So you can't change the lens and sensor separately? Also, it looks like it was designed for the special forces.

Ricoh has non-exsistant customer service, why should I want one?

It's an interesting design. I don't understand why Ricoh is coupling the lenses to the sensor. Sensor technology changes so quickly. Maybe they will release a K-mount/sensor adapter in the future.

This is daring and I'm curious to see how it'll be recieved by Joe Consumer. I'm a little disappointed they didn't go all the way and make the sensor and lenses detachable from eachother. That would have been some revolution.

But they can make a sensor cartridge which supports detachable lenses at any time. Still it looks too much like a mock up camera, even more - a 3d render instead of real model, so one cant be sure.

Maybe you shouldn't, but those who want its unique capabilities would go for it and settle for less than the quickest service. Not that Ricoh seem to care that much about markets other than the Japanese one.

Oh, and by the way, Ricoh's US service is handled by C.R.I.S Camera. Guess what? they're located in Arizona, just a couple of hours drive from where you live

Simple. They can match the lens and the sensor. Use a small-sensor for zoom lenses and maintain pocketability (unlike M43), and use a larger APS-C sensor with lenses that are used in situations where size can be compromised (e.g. tele and macro lenses).

The pictures may be of a mock up, but the camera is very real. See this video:

Thats definately a standard digicam sensor camera - not 4/3 or APSC IMO.

For Ricoh this makes perfect sense. Instead of having to choose a GRD3 or GX300 you can have both - and upgrade your camera every few years when a new module comes out for less money than upgrading the whole camera (which has stayed pretty much the same for years anyway).

As a Gx100 owner, I still have no reason to change. I love the darn thing.

Pentax had shown a camera system a few yeasr back (2006 maybe?) that used sensor/lens combos.

So, now we wait and see if Ricoh offers a K mount sensor?

here is a photo of the beast:

It may be interesting to Ricoh folks, but I don't exactly see this as a game changer. Just a slightly different take on a static theme.

So not only will the body be obsolete in 5 years but so will the lenses!

Woot +1 for a consumer's dream system!

One of the craziest idea...

10 MP CCD + zoom...
12 MP CMOS + macro...

* Two lenses introduced: 24-72mm f/2.5-4.4 with 10MP CCD built-in sensor and VGA video. Price:
」300. + body 」420. = 」720 (805 euro)

* 50mm f/2.5 macro lens with a 12.3MP CMOS sensor and HD video. Price: 」600 + body 」420 = 」1020 (1140 euro).

rather expensive....

リコー、“ユニット交換式”デジタルカメラ「GXR」 - デジカメWatch

10 MP CCD sensor is 1/1,7"
CMOS - 12 MP APS-C with 4 fps and 1280*720@24 fps video

Future units:

"portrait photography unit with full-size sensor"
"ultra-wide unit "
"super-telephoto unit / high-sensitivity astronomical photography"
"ultra high-speed continuous shooting sports сapture unit " -
" waterproof and dustproof unit"

Innovative experiment. I don't know that the average consumer would go for this. Might be a little to far forward. It'll also make changing the lens a pain when you're in the field. Slow you down quite a bit.
