Nikon high ISO noise reduction?

So I picked up a D300s a little while back and for the most part have been leaving high ISO noise reduction at the "normal" setting. For those also shooting Nikon, do you find that "norm" NR smudges too many details or is it the optimal setting? And I do often shoot RAW if that helps. Thanks.

Thanks. So far NR set at "normal" seems to be giving good results. On my K20D I always leave NR off so it's just a matter of getting used to the difference.

I'm not sure about the D300s sensor, but I leave NR off on my D700. JPEG's look fine straight out of the camera.

I believe the NR settings don't make a huge difference if you shoot RAW, but I could be wrong.

edl, I didn't consider that NR would look that different applied to RAW vs. JPEG files--thanks.
