I still have the D50, decided not to sell it because I liked it so much. If I do keep it, which lens would be best to get for it under $150 other than the 18-55mm kit lens? I got that one with the camera and the sharpness on it was just terrible so I sold it.
18-55 VR? Seriously... for under 150$ your choices are rather limited... I'd guess it mostly depends on what do you want to use it for.. a 50/1.8 fits the bill just as well...

What about any older lenses from Nikon? Since the D50 has a built in focus motor, I can use any of them and still have autofocus, I was looking at the 28-85mm and a few other ones too.

That's the thing... can't quite suggest anything without knowing what do you want to do with it... Although if you're looking for a solid all-rounder without being afraid to sacrifice the wide end, check the 28-105.... These go fairly cheap usually and it's a really nice, sharp lens.

Just get another kit lens. My brother owns a D50 and has shot with it for the last 5 years, I guess. It has held up amazingly well. It only has a 6 megapixel senosr, so it isn't like you need awesome glass. Probably just had a bad version of the kit lens. Still, the camera feels old and cheap when I shoot with us. I think he's going to up date it the D90 one of these days....

The D50 was out around the same time as the Pentax *ist DS. I think they might even be using the same Sony 6MP CCD sensor. When I got (back) into the photography game in the fall of 2005, it was a toss-up between the D50 and *ist DS (The Rebel was out of my budget). Ithink the reason I picked the Pentax was the way it felt in my hands (build quality/ergonomics).

I bought my first DSLR, a Pentax, *ist DS when the D50 & D70 were current. I was origionnally looking at the Nikons since my film slr sere Nikon ( an FM & FE2) I didn't care for the size of the Nikons (the D50 & D70 were noticeably bulkier than an FM / FE) and I didn't particulary care for the ergonomics. What really made me rule them out was the fact that they would not meter with my old AI lenses. Besides the ist DS felt much better and seemed better constructed. To the origional poster, with a D50, there should be plenty of newer used lenses that are fully compatible.
