Sony to Drop FF?

I'm not sure where to post this... if the moderator wants to move it, that's just fine. But this IS a rumor... both Nikon guru Thom Hogan and mirrorlessrumors are reporting that Sony is considering dropping full-frame DSLRs - even though they have another FF camera about to come out.

Thom Hogan's Nikon Field Guide and Nikon Flash Guide

Mirrorless Rumors | Home

Now, I'm not saying anyone is right or wrong... but IF this rumor turns out to be true, what kind of impact do we think this might have on any potential Pentax FF plans? Of course, if Sony drops FF cameras that doesn't necessarily mean they won't develop FF sensors for anyone else. But would such a move make it easier or harder for Pentax to compete in FF? Less competition would appear to make things better. But does Sony see the writing on the wall for the format? Would much a move make it more or less likely that we'll see a FF Pentax DSLR?

Again, I take no sides... but this does seem to be a fascinating development.

Pentax is no such kind of player.... look at what thay propose for the consumers. Small rugged&sealed body - niche, big medium format at low price - niche etc. One should ask a question: what kind of hole can patch Pentax FF among existing FF models? I have no idea.... But if Pentax went into the FF it wouldnt be Sony way i mean it wouldnt be trying to compete with Big Two at direct line, it would be something different. What exactly it can be what features i dont know.... its the problem of Hoya marketing department - and im shure they working on it.....

IMHO, Pentax won't go in FF market the near future because they started the "reduced MF" adventure and they will not have enough money and especially marketing reasons to fight both fights. Consider that in-production lenses, both primes and zooms, are APS-C compatible (excepted are the FA trio and the DFA 50 and 100mm) so there are no ff zooms available.

So, even if I would buy a ff Pentax because I have the FA trio, I really think that only a handfull of Pentax owners would upgrade and, moreover, Pentax will only marginally steal market share from Nicanon ff (multiple reasons including available lens systems, SDM reliability issue, lightning systems etc).

So Sony quitting on ff will not have any impact on Pentax. Smart move anyway, they'll probably sell much more worth of NEX bodies and lenses than the alpha 850 and 900.

Nicanon wil remain the kings of FF now and for the next years. I am curious though about the impact of the 645D on the FF and MF market

Good grief! A whole thread in one post!

The real question, though, probably isn't so much a matter of whether there's a multitude of lenses already in circulation or available to fit a FF Pentax body, as whether Pentax could make a sufficient profit from selling a comparatively small number of FF bodies, and a few (continued) FA/D-FA lenses supplemented perhaps by a lesser number of new FA lenses.

Perhaps it comes down to the price point for such a body - not so expensive as to put off re-entrants to Pentax, but at a sufficient premium to not canniablise their existing APS-C line.

Pentax is still officially producing more FF compatible lenses models than DA only lenses:
DFA50mm macro f/2.8
DFA100mm macro f/2.8WR
FA31mm f/1.8AL Limited
FA43mm f/1.9 Limited
FA77mm f/1.8 Limited
FA35mm f/2AL
FA50mm f/1.4
A50mm f/1.2
FA20-35mm f/4AL
FA28-105mm f/3.2-4.5AL(IF)
FAJ 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6AL
FAJ 75-300mm f/4.5-5.8AL
A35-80mm f/4-5.6

Plus DA compatible FA lenses (kind of DFA):
DA*60-250mm f/4ED(IF) SDM
DA*55mm f/1.4 SDM
DA*200mm f/2.8ED(IF) SDM
DA*300mm f/4ED(IF) SDM

Sure some of them could be refreshed (at least aesthetically), but at least they still offer a wide range of lenses for FF.

About Sony dropping FF, I don't think anybody can tell today. The alpha 850-900 were a miss because of the poor image quality for a such expensive camera (noise up to 400 isos). But if the new FF body is a better competitor (and it will surely be) there is no reason for it to not have a good success. So until to know how people will buy the next products, I think it would be too early for Sony to decide to stop it anyway.

I hope you cut/pasted that list from somewhere else rather than typing it...

P.S. If Pentax releases a FF...and if it is better overall than the K-7 I'm definitely in for 2 of them.

Sadly not.
I just opened the official Pentax 2010 lenses catalog I got in my home and copied the references in this post. (you can find it here also: http://www.pentax.jp/japan/imaging/catalog/pdf/lenses_accessories.pdf)

PS: On my side the same. If a FF is coming out (better than alpha 900 for low light conditions) I sure will buy one. If not, I will become canikonist.

What if Nicanon make FF in a sub-$1,500 body?

Woud you still spend $1,200 on a new APS-C Pentax K-? flagship model?

Don't assume that Canikon won't move the yardsticks by making FF cheaper than their APS-C competitors can bear. Eventually, they have little to lose by cannibalizing their own APS-C base and moving those consumers over to their existing FF glass.

I guess FF isn't as profitable as people think, otherwise Sony won't drop it?

personally I would rather heve the APS-c. I shoot a lot of wildlife and other situations where I need the long end rather than wide angle. For me being able to use a less expensive lens to gain the magnification I need is far more valuable than the benefits of FF. Looking at lens price alone, I would much rather shell out money for one 12-24 FA lens than spend the thousands of dollars for a 600 mm FA* lens. The fact that my Tokina 800 f* gives me similar results of a 1200mm lens means I don'[t need to get nearly as close to wildlife as I otherwise would need to. For me APS-C is the better format. I think where Pentax appears to be heading is a smart move. Small, robust, weathersealed bodies, with high reliability and durability designed for use in the field. I think of AP battlefield reporters, and sportsmen who carried all of their gear to capture the moment. I can see a 2 lens or 3 lens setup capable of doing everything without asking yourself, " underwear or lens, which should I take?". So as far as FF for me its a so what. Keep the crop sensor format with features that rival competitors FF offerings in a more compact, flexible package and I'm hooked. Honestly I think there are a lot of embedded reporters in Iraq and Afghanastan who wouldn't mind the smaller/lighter setup.

+1... but I'm only speaking for myself. I understand a lot of Pentaxians really want FF. Aristophanes raises a very good question: Would we pay $1200 for an APS-C camera if the competition offers FF for $1500?

For me, the answer comes down to two issues: How big is the camera? If it's the same size as an as APS-C camera (or smaller), you'll have my attention. And how much do the lenses cost? I suspect this last item will kill it for me. I used to buy very expensive lenses in another life. But, today, my limit is $800 - for something I really want and am willing to save for. Generally, the limit is more like $600. What kind of new, auto-focus FF lens can I buy for that kind of money?

My dream FF camera would be $1000 or less for the body, $600 or less for each lens... and the body would be the same size as a 35mm film SLR. Of course, I may be asking for the impossible - at least in 2010. But there are a lot of people like me - which is why the FF market, is so tough. Canon and Nikon have it locked up because they can service true professionals so well. Most consumers and hobbyists - with exceptions - are probably more like me.

Pentax was wise to bring out a comparatively inexpensive medium-format camera.

@Aristophanes If Nikon and Canon bring out FF in a sub $1,500 body I will say "Hooray!" and buy one, unless of course Pentax also brings its own FF body out at this price. Either way I don't see how this would be a bad thing. Now if Nikon can do that and somehow sell some of their really good lenses for less than $1,800 then I'll really be interested.

However, I don't see any of this happening soon. The Sony A850 is the closest anybody has come to doing this and that was for a $2000 camera that didn't do as well as expected. I'm not saying it did horribly, but when the A850 first came out people were saying it was going to revolutionize the game. Then a little bit later Canon comes out with the Canon 7D for $1,700 and beats just about everyone with it, which, if anything, proved that there is still money to be made in the APS-C sensor size.

Meanwhile, I see used Canon 5Ds still selling for $1200-$1400 if they are in good condition, and how old is that camera, four years? I don't know if they have the motivation to drop the price of their full frame systems -- yet. At some point it would be nice if your prediction came true, though.

@shuie I think a lot of times news photographers do the opposite of what most people will do and try to use full frame so they can get use wide angles and get really immersed in the action. It's sort of counter intuitive from a safety standpoint for them to get so close to danger, but that's why they win the awards.
