I'm on the fence on whether to go Sony or Nikon. I'm planning to get a APS-C body and a full frame body. They must both be same mount. I really love the idea of using FF lenses on FF AND APS-C.

A55+A850 seems nice. Especially with the ZEISS 135 / 85 primes. Low light performance seems less than stellar though. Brand longetivity could be an issue. I'm not sure about the strength of AF.

The nikon D7K + D700 seems like a good matchup as well, except for the d700's 12 MP sensor. Low light performance would be amazing but one of the reasons I want full frame is increased resolution. Stellar AF on the nikon as well.

I'm in a unique position where I can't really try out any of these models, so while comparing them never seems to pick a good winner, it's all I can really do. The d700 examples posted in this thread are remarkable, the low light ones are especially impressive and show the strength of that sensor. I'm also able to hold out for a while, my next big photo opportunity will happen in march.

I have no experience with the Sony cams, but I do Nikon.

If you are looking at D7000 / D700 combo don't forget to check out the D300(s). D300(s) is a great camera at about the same price as D7000, but uses the same battery as D700, grip, and the menus and controls are the same on both cameras as well.

Not looking to sway, just letting you know.

Having received a Leica M9 for my birthday, and having being told about a Leica M to Pentax K mount adapter made by novoflex it looks like I'll be doing a few lens comparisons with Pentax lenses and their Leica counterparts. I have ordered the adapter.

lenses I'll be testing

Pentax FA31mm f/1.8 Limited Vs Leica summilix and summicron 35mm f/1.4/f/2 lenses both Asph and pre-Asph versions
Pentax 43mm f/1.9 Limited in Leica M mount Vs Voigtlander 40mm f/1.4
Pentax 50mm f/1.2 Vs Leica noctilux 50mm f/1.0, Konica Hexanon 50mm f/1.2
Pentax FA 77mm f/1.8 limited Vs Leica summilux 77mm f/1.4

though working with the pentax lenses will be tricky, because there won't be any range-finder coupling.
Nice birthday present wow

the 43 is available in leica screw mount mount if you can find one (apparently though the design and optics are pentax the body was made by Cosina. Another good argument for them pairing with cosina on an Evil/Rf

Okay, here is the cure. Problem is, there are some quite talented photographers in this thread. I will bring the thread back down to earth.

Nothing special, just one of my first shots with my new D700. Same shot, different post processing.

EDIT (1/13/2011):See I really can kill a thread!

Hi JSherman,

Are those pictures cropped? I see some vignetting, which appears pleasing rather than stifling, so I'm unsure as to whether those were cropped by the camera to DX, or cropped by a program to something around DX size, or if those were captured FX?

If the 1-year old isn't already walking, he will be soon. Then you'll have your hands full.

All are shot in FX mode, no cropping, no lens correction. (Lightroom has a pre-loaded profile for the 35 1.8G - if I enable that, it mitigates some of the vignetting - but it's not being used in these shots.)

Where you really see vignetting with this lens on the D700 is stopped down, infinity shots - black corners. For closer-in shots, it's fully usabe, and a very sharp choice (sharper than the older, FF 35 f/2D.)

And yes, he's trying to walk all the time, and he's very close!
