The minimum focus on the DA*200 F2.8 is 120cm whereas the 70-200 VRII is at 140cm. That's quite a lot if you're trying to dissolve the background.

Finally got the 50 1.8 G today and took a few shots with it. A great inexpensive very sharp lens:

Nikon D800 50mm f/1.8 G at f/5.6 1/320 ISO 100

same settings

On my way up to the lake district. I should have a little time in Birmingham to pick up a 85mm f/1.8 D. they also have a 60mm micro, but suspect this is close to my 50mm

AF-S 80-200 f/2.8
It lacks completely VR, but IMO is in the same IQ of the 70-200VRII without shrinking actual focal length as you get closer.

Some from last night including one with the new 85 f/1.8D

Nikon D800 Nikkor 85 1.8D at f/5.6 1/15 ISO 400 (on a tripod but wanted to catch the reflection of a car in the boat's side)

Salmon Mousse - a small boat resting on the shores of Windermere:

Nikkor 50 1.8G at f/8 1/20 ISO 100

Nikkor 14 - 24 at 24mm f/16 1/6 ISO 100

While shooting Pentax, one of my most relied upon lenses is the DA*50-135. There does not seem to be a suitible replacement in Nikon FF land. The Tokina 70-200/4 has been shown as a mock-up, but it is not something that should be counted upon until it is released and and in the hands of users. I could shoot a Sigma 50-150 or Tokina 50-135 in DX mode, but that defeats the purpose of shooting FF. Although the D800's 1.2x crop mode makes it somewhat more viable.

Have any of you Nikon FF shooters used a Nikon 70-210/4? Users seem to be pretty happy with the IQ, but find the autofucus to be unreliable with this lens.

Any other suggested substitutes for the 50-135?

A 50-135 f/2.8 APS-C lens is basically a 75-203 f/4 lens on FF. I don't see the point (apart from size perhaps?) for wanting the slower lens (f/4) when a FF F/2.8 is equivalent to a f/1.8 APS-C lens. You really can see the difference in that DOF IMO.

Yes, size is the reason I am seeking out such a lens. If I completely switch over to Nikon, a 70-200/2.8 is in my future. But there will also be times where I would choose to take a 70-200/4 instead, if available. For example on a long hike, or if I am chasing all 3 of my kids at the same time at the zoo, etc.

I bought the 80-200/2.8 D (not AF-S). It cost me just under US$1,000 used. Superb lens and takes a Kenko Pro 300 x1.4 TC beautifully. Very fast AF, no VR (never noticed I need it), smaller and not as heavy as the 70-200 lenses. Superb lens, it's the equivalent of your 50-135.

Thanks for the tip. I will look into this lens.

Rather like the mono. Excellent stuff. Some great scenes.

Thats a small piece of cake considering you were at Chesters by the River :-)

Get my D800 & 16-35 on Friday and there will be more D800 Lakes shots floating around this weekend :-)

They run out of the brilliant meringue roulades in the mornings. Their wood fired oven pizzas are very good indeed. Hope the weather is better for you than it is today. Long range forecast says showers.

Bloody awful today. Might do a waterfall wander tomorrow. Could be wild.

Their food & coffee are both excellent. I usually treat folk to a coffee and cake there if I'm doing a course/wander in the area.
