A friend is having his first son tomorrow, by scheduled c-section. He requested I get out and get an image of the "supermoon" going on to commemorate the occasion, and so with a bit of help from Photographer's Ephemeris and the US Naval Observatory's data feeds, I planned and took the following this evening:

I've another image planned tomorrow morning just before sunrise -- we'll see if I manage to crawl out of bed and get on location. :-)

Nice shot. Maybe crop it into a pano just above the wispy cloud on the right?

Thanks! Yeah I plan to experiment a bit with the crop factor before I print a copy for my friend.

Here's this morning's effort at the same moon's set over the city skyline. This was a close thing -- I almost left before the moon reappeared behind those clouds, thinking it wouldn't happen. I'd like to pretend it was a story of perseverance, but in reality it was luck that I was still on-site. You can see from the photo that the gap between the mountain ridges and the band of cloud is less than the angular diameter of the moon itself, and before the moon emerged the contrast between sky and cloud was so low you couldn't tell the gap was there at all by the naked eye.

2017 marks the 10th anniversary of the conception of this project so I updated the old picture of my AgOMatic film agitation machine. I began thinking what it would take to build this in January 2007 and by the end of the year I finished building it. But I spent the early part of 2008 writing the software for it. It has a lot of network capability and even a wireless access point built in. All running on a Soekris Net4801 general purpose communications board and the OpenBSD operating system. It still works and I still use it.
