Thanks, guys. She was pleased indeed, but I wasn't entirely... learned I really need to use f/8 for those head-on shots.

Sigma 24 f/2.8 SW II

I now have two Sigma 24 f/2.8 Super Wide II's ! $77 and $69, respectively. Ran across the second on in a shop the other day and bought it because the first was cosmetically rough, this new one almost new-looking. Shouldn't matter, but for $69, it was an impulse buy on a gift card for the store.

Anyway, couple snaps from last night's snowfall, f/2.8, 1/80s, ISO 6400:

Well, I paid $77 for the UG one, make me an offer

Couple things to know about that lens if you (or anyone) doesn't already:

The good:

1) It's very sharp, even wide-open in the center
2) It focuses very close for a 24mm lens, to 1:4 magnification (very good for a 24)

The bad:

3) AF is noisy, clunky-sounding
4) Veiling glare. It flares like an SOB when hit with incidental light. Pointing straight into the light source it isn't so bad, but if strong light hits the front element at an angle, flare city.

Because of #4, it's tough to shoot outdoors at an angle to the sun. You need to use a hood as much as possible.

But, for the price, it's a useful indoor-wide, or useful outdoors if you avoid that flare problem.

Some test snaps from today:

f/8

f/8, at her feet

f/4

f/2.8, up close, followed by crop

Crop, look at detail on and right below eye

f/2.8

Crop, focus on stain in center of frame

f/2.8

Crop

f/4.5

f/2.8, bottom of cymbal

f/2.8, very sharp wide-open makes for some nice shooting indoors
