I prefer the increase in sharpness I get when a lens is stopped down slightly, over shooting it wide-open, especially if I'm not trying to the get the maximum amount of light through the lens. Also I find that sometimes the DOF is too thin at f/1.4 and I don't get enough of the subject in focus. But I think the main reason why I chose the 1.4D over the 1.8D is that the bokeh is much nicer and creamier (imho).. that was worth the price to me. !
The quality of bokeh of the 1.4D is much creamier than the 1.8D's busy bokeh. The 1.8D is still a great lens and a great value, but the increase in price to the 1.4D does have it's impacts on image quality. That being noted, the 1.8D is plenty sharp wide open.
