PS: Dare I mention it that I also shot a tree yesterday to try the Zeiss out... not on the scale of your shot but gives a fair indication that the lens will be pretty awesome on this camera.




PS2: My Sigma 150 is going back for replacement or repair after 2 days. The entire internal optical train, including the iris, is moving around and banging into the walls of the lens casing. Surprisingly that lens is still pin sharp. This was happening to the 1st unit they supplied in the shop and they promptly got a replacement delivered. It doesn't look promising as far as longevity goes for that lens.

Looks good mate, ive heard that 35-70 2.8 is an awesome lens and very affordable too.

It is an awesome lens. I have had multiple 24-70, 28-70mm lenses and selected the 35-70mm. The lens focuses quickly, is built well, has great color and IQ. The 35-70mm also mates well with my 17-35.

I am always tempted by the 20mm 2.8d. I actually bought a second hand one a few months ago, but returned it (thankfully the ebay seller allowed it), because the screw drive train was worn out and the AF was unbearably noisy.

Must say I'm increasingly tempted by FF but I would definitely need to go down the ultra low budget route. Would it be possible to pick up an older body and a small clutch of legacy/cheap but quality lenses for, lets say, less than double the cost of a new k5? I would like a decent wide angle, a fast 35 to 50 prime, a short zoom, and maybe a 135 or 200mm. Using Pentax glass with an adapter would be an advantage as I already have a 50/1.7, 135/2.5 and 75-150/4 I could conceivably use.

You could no doubt get a good price on the original Canon 5D. Still a good camera. Picking the right glass on FF can be very important as it can reveal more than crop.

seconded. Canon 5Dc (the later production model) is a really good choice for FF if you are on budget. I would even go out on a limb and claim that it is a better deal than any APS-C camera available today...

You guys are killing me. Don't know if I want to post anymore images. (I have a lot more to learn...)

A lot of beautiful shots the last week or so.

My wife and I celebrated our 9th wedding anniversary last week and we spent a few days in the very pretty little village of Painswick. It is a very quiet place indeed - it felt like a Sunday on both Thursday and Friday!

This is Painswick's pretty church - quite contrasty so decided to convert to black and white in Silver efex pro 2

My Nikon wide-angle lens right now is the 20mm f/2.8D, which I love for it's size and center sharpness on my D700. Yesterday
I was able to go on a quick walkabout through some cityscape for a D800 + 20mm trial.

Initial conclusion: Flare, CA on backlit edges can be a problem, mustache distortion as well - but the distortion seems to
be handled fairly well by the 20's shipped lens profile in LR 4. Sharpness is very good at f/8, acceptable at the very edges,
although I would love to compare it directly to a 14-24 2.8, 16-35 4, 17-35 2.8 or Zeiss 21 - none of which I have. And of
course, I find the detail retained by this sensor + lens amazing.

It should be mentioned that the size was extremely nice on this walkabout - the D800 with the 20 mounted fit in to a very
small Tamrac Velocity 6x sling bag along with the 50 1.8. This is the bag I use to carry my non-telephoto aps-c combos
around, so essentially no size issue here.

Images below, all NEF 12-bit converted in LR 4.1 with some sharpening and slight clarity adjustments on a few, and later
some small contrast bumps to retain color in the shots I took after the clouds moved over.

Thanks for the impressions regarding the 20mm - I have the Voigtlander 20mm and will be back to visit your post when I get out and use it some more. Of course I'm still struggling with the use of an UW...
