The 300mm F4 IF-ED does not have a built in motor. It utilizes the camera's screw driven motor which is why it is a bit slower focusing than the AF-S model. You can minimize focus throw for a bit faster focusing.

Even though most wound consider it too slow for sports, I use mine rather often.
My DA*50-135 has gone off for SDM replacement. I am starting to see the value of screw driven lenses.

Until my D800E returns from Sydney I'm back on K-5 for now... besides I'm broke.

Over a year since I've posted anything, I still wander around here to read stuff and find help for some of my friends who use Pentax gear.

After 1.5yrs of using D700 shooting gigs and performances I still kind of miss some of the small user friendly and intuitive stuff of K5 but couldn't be happier for the change.

Thanks, all!

Taking shots of the newbie, but nothing of note, mostly just for extended family. It's a wonderful time.

Axl asked for some shots from the Sigma 50-150 2.8 HSM in FX mode and 1.2x crop mode, and here are a few...

(Summary: Yes, it's fully a DX lens, and even in 1.2x crop mode it shows significant vignetting at 50mm - not so much at 135 to 150mm, though.)

FX:

150mm f/4

50mm f/4

1.2X crop mode:

150mm f/4

50mm f/4

Thanks a lot Jay.
I have try to crop the FX shots to APS-H crop and see where that leves me..
But it doesn't look as promising as Tokina (aka DA*) 50-135/2.8. That one seems to be perfectly fine on APSH crop but the AF is sloooow so I'm not sure...I might as well just get fed up with it and just get 5D2

Anyway, thanks a lot...

Just back from a short trip to Austria and took both of my cameras with me. When I need speed, the 645D just isn't built for that so bird shots will nearly always be done with the Canon. I do find that the Pentax has much better dynamic range than the Canon, although the Canon's inbuilt HDR is good and even better as it retains the RAW files. Here are some more shots including some of the Maltatal Dam, which is Austria's highest at about 700ft high.

Canon 5D mk III EF 16 - 35 at 17mm and f/14 1/30 and ISO 400

The view from the top of the dam:

canon 5D mk III EF 16 - 35 L at 20mm and f/14 1/40 ISO 400

Looking from the top of Villach Alpenstrasse - this is a handheld HDR using photomatix to blend the three exposures taken using auto bracketing on 5D3:

Canon 5D mk III Carl Zeiss 35 f/2 at f/8 ISO 100

An alpine bird - not sure which one could be a kind bird from the crow family, possibly a raven:

Canon 5D mk III EF 70 - 200 f/2.8 IS L at f/8 and 200mm 1/1250 ISO 400

An alpine cow complete with bell:

Canon 5D mk III EF 70 - 200 L at f/8 and 200mm, 1/400 ISO 400
