Nice shots all!

This isn't my best effort, but is my first attempt at shooting star trails. Shot 100 JPEGs last night and compiled them with the freeware program Star Trax for Mac. Silver Efex from there. 30 second exposures, f/2.8 at ISO 100 on the D800/24-70 G combo.
Clouds rolled in kind of screwing with the shot. Also, I must have had too much time in between shots with the intravalometer as you can make out the individual stars.

I'm actually looking for something in the 70-200 range as well, and am looking at the 80-200 f/2.8 and new 70-200 f/4 VR. Kind of leaning toward the 70-200 but it's still pricey and the 80-200 seems like a decent bang for the buck. However, some folks on the various forums are reporting that the 80-200 isn't really holding up on the D800. Have you found this to be the case? I'm also tempted by the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 non-VC ($750). A lot of my shots are on a tripod and I don't know if I'd really miss the VC.

I haven't used the 70 - 200's although the f/4 does tempt me. Good timing as I was on the hills behind my house above the bay this evening. Was hoping for some good shots of the steelworks with the 80 - 200 but the wind was blowing quite fiercely and when I found somewhere with some shelter, it was too dark to frame properly.

This is a full shot followed by a 4 x 5 crop with the 80 - 200

1/400 ƒ/11 ISO 400 200 mm

at the other extreme this could be sharper i was holding down the tripod firmly and increased the ISO to 200. I would have preferred to be at 50 to leave several seconds to make the most of the smoke but the wind was playing havoc

1 sec ƒ/8 ISO 200 80 mm

I find the 80 - 200 an excellent if heavy lens. It's all down to whether you need f/2.8. If you don't the 70 - 200 f/4 has had great feedback. The 80 - 200 is excellent on the D800 though, the AFS version in any case.

One with the 24 - 70

1/80 ƒ/8 ISO 200 35 mm

Thanks for the feedback on the 80-200. I'm still torn. I was kind of set on the f/4 but then was out sneaking up on birds today with the 24-70 and was pretty happy to be able to bring it to 2.8 for the higher shutter speed and OOF areas. I imagine I will want to do a lot of hiking this summer though....the f/4 is clearly lighter and would be better for that.

I was comparing some images at the digital picture and I think the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 (non VC) actually might have the edge to the 80-200 though. It appears to be quite good, though slow AF.

Anyways, here are a few shots from today. I hid under a blanket in the front yard until the birds forgot about me and then got some close ups with the 24-70 at 70mm. All cropped somewhat.

Now that's dedication, well done you and the results were worth it! As for your lens dilemma, I'm using the early Sigma 70-200 2.8 EX HSM (non DG, non OS) and am sufficiently pleased with it that more expensive options don't get a second thought. Not entirely sure how it'd hold up on the D800 but I hope to give it a go at some point

One from weekend, this old ship has been stuck in a small tidal dock for 30 or so years now, since I last saw it some street artists have done a little work to brighten things up. Tokina 19-35 stopped waaay down to make the corners work as a lens should, tripod, ND grad.

Good info on the 80-200 - sale of my speakers has fallen through so further purchases on hold again...

Like that Porga - the wee 50 1.8D is an excellent wee lens. A shot of my cat with the same lens.

Nice 50mm shots, guys! Really like that b&w Porga. You captured the scene well--a good story piece. The guy on the left is skeptical of something....

Thank you, I too think he was skeptical, judging from his face.
