Nikon lens recommendations?

My editors at the small newspaper I work for are Nikon users. Although they own good cameras (D300, D90, D80), they are extremely budget conscious about their lens purchases. Right now they comment about how envious they are of my image quality, and they want a f/2.8 lens for sports and event shooting, but frankly the best of the best from Nikon is unrealistic for their budget.

I've recommended options to them from Sigma, Tamron and Tokina that would fit in the $300-700 price range. However, I'm just curious, are there any good bang for the buck choices for Nikon that you'd recommend for them? I don't know much about Nikon, admittedly, so I was wondering if there are any hidden gems that people swear by.

At that price, not much I can think of. Notch it up a little and the Sigma 70-200mm or similar Tamron are the way to go ($750 or so). I have the Sigma and it's stellar. Fast and sharp. It's a very good lens in all respects.

Well that's slightly disappointing. I was hoping someone would jump in and say, "You idiot, Nikon has the following great lenses in this price range." But I guess if that were true Sigma and Tamron wouldn't be in business.

Thanks for the response, Peter.

You can get an 80-200/2.8D for $600-700 if you catch the right deal (used). It's a very good lens. At that price range, though, I'd probably go with the Tammy 70-200/2.8 (though I'm not sure if the Tammy is BIM for Nikon...).

They'll probably go with the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 if they can save up enough money. They thought with HSM the Sigma would focus a bit faster for sports, which is what they'd probably use it for most of the time.
