just switched to sony

I just started into photography last summer so by all means I am a noobie. I first got a K-X and then a K200d. I really wanted to stay pentax but they didnt have a camera inbetween the K-R and K-5 that i really really wanted. I looked at the K7 and k20d really hard, but in the end decided to go sony.

I bought a Sony A580 body with vertical grip, spare batteries, and 50mm F1.8 DT lens all brand new for $916 shipped. We wanted a camera that had excellent low light capabilities and good video.

My wife really loves this Sony, she doesnt understand ISO, apeture, depth of field, shutter speed. when i try to explain how that works it goes over her head. However she knows how to setup a shot better then me. -- between the two of us there is at least half a photographer :-) The sony is inituitive and the auto modes actually work quite well (though i avoid that stuff personally)

I liked the ergonomics of my K200d with vertical grip better, but i dont have a vertical grip for this sony yet.

Here is the first picture i shot with the camera. handheld, jpg straight out of camera then quality compressed by picasa down to 1mb. 50mm dt f1.8 lens at f7.1 1600iso

yes, my first picture after unboxing my new camera wasnt artistic or anything special. However my K200d was non functional in the same room without a tripod. Pictures over 800 iso looked awful even with post processing. This was straight from the camera and looks good to me at 1600iso.

The K200D is old tech. It's not surprising.

A K-r would have cost less and had as good or better ISO performance, but hey, it's your money.

I guess Sony has improved some - when I was looking around for a DSLR, I was considering a Sony since they were cheap. But, back then (300 series?), the ISO performance even at 400 or 200 was pretty crappy. So I went with the K20D :P

A580 has the same sensor as the K5, by the look of the results on DXOMark:

I have a Kx and a K7 and I just picked up a NEX-5 and I'm extremely impressed. This will be my street camera. I'm looking forward to the Zeiss 24mm slated to come out this year.

Is there a point to the OP's post?
Sounds like he has his forums confused and should be on sonyforums.com

Congrats!
being able to capture great pictures requires a great photographer and when one needs to take a picture the best camera is the one you have in your hands...

(looks a bit boxy to me...)

Actually, Sony is a radio company But, they now make excellent televisions... and seems like they make good cameras now... of which they probably will improve.

As far as I can tell, there aren't any "bad" dSLRs out there right now (although the olympus e5 has fallen fairly fall off the pace). Camera bodies come and go, but glass is forever. Which of the upper end Sony lenses are you planning to put on this? The Sony Zeiss 24-70? 70-200 f2.8? 16-35 f2.8?

The lens prices are too high for me, personally, but I can understand if someone has the money wanting some of those lenses...
