Well..the D7000 made it's way into our home tonight. I was all over it.
Some things Nikon gets right, like all the little bits that go with the camera and accessories.
As for the Camera?
There are too many buttons and button combinations for my liking. Lots of choices about what to set and not set. The way the lens mounts is backward to what I am used to. It's a nice camera for sure, just very different in how Nikon implements things. Very alien to me as I have been raised on Pentax. It's like learning to drive in a country that has left hand drive and then going to another that has right hand drive. I can see how it might be tough for a Nikonian to understand a Pentaxian and vice versa.

I shoot both Nikon and Pentax.

It can be done.

No one needs to get hurt.

I like FredMiranda just fine.

Agreed. There's so much knowledge there that I just read and absorb, so much so, that my post count there is nil.

Nikon's way of doing things is much closer to Pentax's than Canon's, thank god.

Ya think? I can't seem to find out how to do "Program Lines" like the Pentax or use the control wheels for Aperture and Shutter Control in Program mode. I think until I become familiar with my hubby's Nikon, I can't agree with your statement.

I like the D7000, but I REALLY like my K5 more!

It's when he gets a Pentax to Nikon adapter you'll have to start locking up your gear

It's totally safe then. The only PK-->NI adapters are optical crud.

So we've gone out and about a few times, and he's pretty frustrated at the moment. Since he's shot Pentax before his D7000, his learning curve is pretty steep. Don't laugh at his Photo-Vest and his Yellow shirt....<chuckle>...I don't think he meant to show his "Nikon Colors".

Personally, I think the photo-vest is kinda dorky, but he likes it and I love him, so there.

We've taken our scooters to our little down-town and were shooting under a pavillion.

The original of this image was a K5, FA50mm, f/1.7, ISO100, 1/180sec, Center Weighted Average.

I LOVE my K5.

Going from a K10D to the D7000

Was about a 30min learning curve;-)

have consulted the manual twice;-)

in fact I think it took me way longer to get around the K10D - but then I was coming from a prosumer compact

horses for courses;-)

Below are two images taken straight after the battery was charged auto everything with no setups - lens is the 16-85 VR

This dslr will make him an extremely happy man which I'm sure will make your love blossom:-)

i moved to nikon last year, from k10->km->kx->D7000 and the learning curve wasn't bad at all.
after 7 months of use, the only thing i've wanted was to be able to zoom in 100% in one button press. nikon left that out of the d7000 (it's in the higher end models though).

as for forums, i haven't found any equivalent to this one.

there's nikonians which is the most popular but you need to pay for membership AFAIK.
nikon cafe and fred miranda.

I'm glad that we will now be "diversified" in our camera gear.
Which is a good thing. Now, you'll be way more informed about the differences be it good or bad.

As the weeks go by, he's developed some K-5 envy.

What he wishes his D7000/Nikon had...

1) HyperProgram and a "green" button - where changes to the Aperture/Shutter in Program mode can be reset with a push of the button

2) The Video operated by the shutter button - His Video/live view only use the little button/slider on the back of the camera

3) Less Nikon weenies that just want to talk technical and not get out and take pictures

4) Easier "Program Line" manipulation

5) A better GPS implementation like the new O-GPS-1 and the K5.

I think overall, he's happy, but I can tell that he would have prefered a K-5.

We've basically re-built a pretty solid kit for him and sadly even if we wanted to duplicate what I have in Pentax, the availability of the gear I have is sparse as some of it is not made anymore or is expensive on eBay.

One thing I'm enjoying about Nikon is the availability of 2nd hand stuff, have picked up a 50/1.4, 1.7x tc, and a Tamron 17-50/2.8, all used. In New Zealand there's not a lot of good used stuff for Pentax (except when I sold all mine!).
