Imaging Resource posts lab shots of Nikon J1

Imaging Resource just posted their lab suite on the Nikon J1. I've compared the images and at the pixel level, IMHO at ISO 1600 the new Nikons' image quality is on par with the EP3 and GF3. More detail, less noise reduction. It's slightly below the G3 and considerably below the 5N, K5 and C3.

A picture says a thousand words. It is very impressive for a 2.7x crop sensor !!! Critics may have to eat their words....

Thanks for posting the link. I looked vary carefully at the J1 compared to the EP3 and don't quite agree. Except for red detail, which Nikon does better than anyone, it looks like the EP3 has more detail, better dynamic range, better contrast, and less noise.

Did you use Imaging Resource's comparometer? On the red detail, it's clear that the Nikon is slightly ahead, but Nikon's tend to be good with the reds. Here is a screen capture off the comparometer at ISO 1600. The GF3 is on the left and the J1 on the right. It could be due to a 12MP image vs a 10MP image, but if you look at the edge of the shoulder of the HELLAS bottle, there seems to be clearly more noise with the GF3. Otherwise I think its a wash.

The EP3 is slightly better than the GF3, but overall I would say that the J1 is quite competitive with either camera

The links are here as the forum sofware seems to be scaling the images...

It certainly doesn't seem to measure up to the other mirrorless options out there in terms of image quality or resolution. And it isn't even that small (including the lens). Not certain what Nikon is thinking (probably the same thing Pentax was thinking with the Q, I suppose).

EOSHD obviously did selective comparison so justify its previous conclusion. The V1 definitely loses to the G3, which is a pale comparison of the 5N, but it is a match for the majority (including latest releases) of M43 12MP sensors like the G
GF3.

Just putting it out there, there's no such thing as a GH3, and none of the GH series have had the 12megapickle sensor

To be honest though, even matching a 4-year old sensor isn't exactly praise-worthy, but from the samples I've seen it doesn't even come close

Typo. I meant the GF3. I suppose we will wait for the official review from Imaging Resource for that judgement....

It may be an old sensor, but then GF3 was just released, so its a NEW camera

Indeed... To be honest I actually hope the Nikon 1 does compete with the 12mp MFT models - then Oly/Pana might finally take the hint and retire the old lump

My eyes are better DXO calibrated, but Nick is the better photographer.
