3 ways to go Zeiss on a NEX 5N

1. Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* E 24mm f1.8 ZA. Native E-mount means autofocus and designed for the camera. USD1,000

2. Zeiss Biogon T* 28mm f/2.8 ZM with a Leica M-Mount adapter. As compact as the E-mount, but no autofocus. USD1,000 from Adorama plus USD100 for M-E mount adapter.

3. Zeiss Distagon T* 24mm f2.0 ZA SSM USD1,300 plus USD400 for LAEA2 adapter

I think Option 3 will provide the best IQ and the fastest phase detection AF, but Option 1 is brighter and more compact. Option 2 may actually be the most compact for street photography and AF might be useful. Which one would you go with? What chances would the E-mount Sonnar have of matching the A-mount Distagon in image quality?

#2 maybe as there is little reason to stick a turkey drumstick on the biscuit except for occasional fun? I am speaking w/o know their optical performance though.

Unless you own a rangefinder to use that ZM lens on as well, I would go with the option #1. Autofocus is always nice, and the lens is over a stop faster than option 2. If you're unsure about the performance of the lens, you can wait for some reviews of it.

Full disclosure: I'm going option #1.

I'm also considering option #1 for my NEX-5. IMHO, option #3 only makes sense for someone who also owns Sony Alpha mount system, and option #2 aperture is only 2.8, I want at least F2. Actually the other option I'm considering is Pentax FA* 24 F2 so I can use it with my K-x also.

Given's Steve Huff's pronouncement that the E-Mount Zeiss is not tack sharp, I wonder if 2 is the best option if one likes tack sharp....
