Great shots everyone. I'd be interested to know how old that microphone is.

I visited Ruby tonight in the doggie ICU. She was knocked out. They had to put her on some kind of breathing apparatus earlier today because of the swelling. She's now stable. The doctor is going to call me in the AM when he gets back on to give me an update on her prognosis. Her head is the size of a small watermelon. Seriously.

Not very old. About 5 years or so.

So she was bitten in the neck/face?

I just got through transferring her to my vet this AM. He's a great guy and a good country vet. I was in front of his office at 7:45 when the office rooster came into the parking lot and started crowing- not kidding. I had to pick her up at 6:00 AM from the Emergency Vet. He's going to let me know later today how long she needs to be there. It was really surreal this AM. I had to drive 45 minutes to get there and they just handed me this bag that had an IV drip in it. I'm still half asleep. Here's what she looked like at 7 AM. She is still bleeding. I have so much blood on me I look like I got shot.

Is it a common occurrence for animals to be bit by rattle snakes there? How about people?

Thanks for the update - Ruby was the first thing on my mind when I woke up this morning.

Oh my - I can't believe how swollen her head and neck are! I'm sure it was even worse last night. It sounds as if Ruby is going to make it - I can feel for you in what you've been through the past 18 hours.

Yep, she's going to make it! My uncle's old Collie Dog was bitten by rattlers almost a dozen times in her life...she hated them and never stopped going after them. Her old head bore the scars and in places looked like taut leather hide. After the first few bites she was near immune and would only be sick a day or so ..if that.

Take care of Ruby, and she will be just fine! Give her a big hug from all of us!
Regards!

BTW- With the mild winter...lots of rattlers here this year. Copperheads too. I stay out of the Woods of Otis, both can be found there. I sometimes hear the Squirrels barking and the Jays screaming...its usually a snake they have spotted. Be careful out there....Texas has a lot of snakes!

Just messing around with a fog machine and some Alien Bee strobes on this hand carved wooden face. A strobe flashing behind the mask through the fog with a 20° grid modifier. One on the background, one in front and below aiming up with a soft box and a reflector overhead.

Interesting lighting set up and great photo. The smoke definitely adds a layer of interest and the halo really gives it some depth. I half expect it to start yelling gibberish at me
