Gah ... All this talk of the D700 is making me want one! When is the D800 coming out so I can sell my K-5 + lenses and get the D700 for cheap!?

Lots of speculation about that in the Nikon fora. My guess: D800 will debut at around $3000 and stay at or near that price for all of 2012. In 2013, it will begin to come down to around $2500, and at that point a lot of D700 owners will jump in, sell their D700s, and you'll see the D700 going for around $1500-1700 used.

So, my guess means "you'll probably have to wait until 2013 to easily get a 'deal' on a used D700."

Meantime, enjoy your K-5 - it's a very nice camera in it's own right

Random thought: When I had a K1000, which was heavy as #%(*U)@#, I took nice sharp pictures at much lower shutter speeds than I can manage with my modern plastic DSLR, even with SR. It's a matter of inertia; objects at rest tend to remain at rest, and the more object there is, the more "at rest" it rends to remain. The D700's greater heft probably lens it an advantage over the K-5 in that sense.

FWIW, the K-5 actually weights more than a K1000

D700 on hyvä, sillä on tulevaisuus. Pentax on tiensä päässä, kiitos RICOH.

Although I don't have the D700 but the D7000 I can easily shoot at shutter speeds down to 1/20s with my 35 1.8G and get pin sharp results.

I actually gave this combo to my 16 yr old for the day and he had a keeper rate of 98%.

Whilst in Reunion I shot a Indoor bouldering comp with the 16-85 VR with no more than 1/60s and all the shots were sharp - later on I realized that I had accidentally switched the VR off - which made me conclude that VR is not essential for day to day shooting when employing shorter lenses.

Where VR makes a difference is when it's built into the longer lenses where it stabilizes the image.

I have noticed I can get much sharper handheld photos -- in the sense of blur-free, not focusing -- at the same low shutter speeds and field of view using my old, heavy Canon 1Ds, without an IS lens, than I can with my K-5, even with the SR on. We're talking in the realm of 1/15th at 25mm (FF) focal length field of view.

I am not entirely sure why this is. I may try adding some mass to the K-5 to see if that helps. A monopod does help.

Been wanting to try some experimentation to see whether I can figure it out in more detail.

I also own a D700. My intent was to purchase a Tamron 28-75mm for walking around and a Nikon 24-70mm for more serious photos. After using this inexpensive Tamron, I have changed my mind. I have also purchased a Tamron 70-200mm which also does not offer SR and I haven't had any issues thus far. I believe in most cases, if one desires a good shot in low light, they will use a tripod.
