Playing with the "light painting" mode of the phone. It's hand-held at 10 seconds, so not quite sharp - but not too bad either!

I posted some of these earlier but moder(nish) camera phones deserve far more credit than is currently given. I used Huawei P20 Pro with self-made 3D-printed filter holder housing real filter threads and arca-swiss tripod foot during my latest winter photo trip quite a lot:

CL-Pol filter used with Smooth Water -program. One minute stack (phone stacks at very high shooting rate and combines almost in real-time).

--

And some material from last summer. This one with 720nm Infrared filter and a CL-Pol filter (yes, the filter holder is properly sealed to prevent light leaks) and 30 second exposure. B&W sensor in use.

ND400 filter used here with CL-Pol. 5 seconds.

ND1000 (? maybe, don't remember) with CL-Pol. 30 seconds.

Deep Red B&W filter, CL-pol and ND64 filter. B&W sensor.

720nm Infrared filter, CL-Pol. B&W sensor.

I do wonder why Huawei did the stupid thing and left B&W sensor out of their modern phone models? The 20MP tiny B&W sensor is capable of IQ of B&W converted APS-C camera RAW file. They should throw away the ultra wide angle 40MP sensor from Mate 30 Pro and replace it with ~1-inch B&W sensor which would put most FF cameras to shame in B&W game.

@MJKoski those are great images. Good job. Did you post your filter holder print file online anywhere? Sounds intriguing.

Very impressive results there. I'd never buy another Huawei phone, but the P series are known for having some of the best cameras around.

This is from my Samsung S8, taken with Hypocam, cropped and PP'd a little in Snapseed. It's no replacement for a "proper" camera but the S8 can do well if you know how to work around it's limitations, certainly better than every other phone camera I've owned before.

Thanks for your thoughts. I could make the .STL model available via Google Drive and share it here. I'll keep you updated about this. In theory, it is not hard to modify the holder concept for any phone model as I already did that for my friend's Mate 10 Pro which has different rear camera arrangement (top, center). I like Huawei phones for their cameras but not so much for anything else. Losing google apps -suite is a no-no in Android land currently.

Anyway, the filter holder I designed has a one requirement which is the slim Otterbox case. This is what makes the concept light-tight. After the case is installed the whole package slips right and sits there firmly. Another preparation needed is an extra 52->58+ mm step-up ring for the filter threads. The step-up ring is pushed to 52mm diameter hole around the backside of the holder and allows attaching 58+ mm filters.

My phone uses a case but not otter box, but Lifeproof.
I have had otter box in the past and it was very similar so the .stl may be adaptable to this model.
Thank you for describing the design of your adaptor, so if my existing filters are 49mm the the design could be adapted for that as well.
I would be interested in the share file, thank you.
