Great stuff here, as usual.

Taking advantage of the 1/2.3" sensor for some closeup work:

I just got a Galaxy S7 myself (they share the same camera). I have to say I'm impressed. Shooting RAW on a phone kicks ass!

Do you edit your pics on your phone John? I'm still looking for a good Android RAW editor. I want something that can do all the basics, including remove noise. Snapseed doesn't have noise removal (none that I'm aware of) and Lightroom mobile has crappy reviews.

The latest rumour is that Samsung is working on a 1/1.7" sensor to go into their smart phones.Q7 level images with f1.4 aperture.

Fun fact: Samsung released the S7 and S7 Edge with 2 different camera sensors: A Sony sensor, and their own Samsung sensor. The catch is that you don't get to pick which one you have! (My first unit was a Sony sensor. The phone unit had a defect so I made a switch. Now I have a Samsung sensor).

Samsung Galaxy S7 Britecell vs Sony IMX260 s… | Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge

They're basically identical, though from tests it seems that Sony is a tiny tiny bit sharper, while Samsung does a tiny tiny bit better in low light. Only pixel peepers would have cause to complain one way or another. The average user is fine.

That's a neat way to split test a sensor. I know it drives some phone enthusiasts up the wall though.

Oh and they also did that with the processor, though I think that's more a region thing.

I'm still fleshing out my RAW workflow. Camera FV-5 keep crashing on my and the Samsung camera app keeps switching back to JPG/Store in phone instead of RAW/store on SD card when I'm not looking. Really frustrating, actually.

For now I use Lightroom. It seems to work well. Snapseed used to be better but their UX has actually taken a couple of steps backwards to the point that it's now similar to Lightroom. Lightroom also syncs with the cloud and my desktop, which is really nice. It doesn't have NR but I normally don't worry about that on the phone and with phone photos. I can adjust that when I get to the desktop.

Does a camera phone count? I can't remember... .

Quick panoramic from my OnePlus X was out walking the dog on the Towans and forgot how long the beach was with the tide out.

I only use my phone camera very occasionally but when I do I'm often pleasantly surprised.
