I agree. After the initial positive reaction that aspect does not look so great. With a lens like that, especially in the long end, they're losing the upper hand they had with the sensor.

+1

Its a sexy looking camera, nice sized sensor when compared to the X10, m43 etc...but damn, that is pretty slow at the long end.
It's soooooo close to being everything i wanted in my K-5 Companion

That AE comp dial under the mode dial looks pretty sweet I have to say.

The big trouble is Panasonic has no built-in VF. I would prefer Canon G1X.
The EVF in my Panasonic GH2 and GH1 work great for stills and video and the GH2 is not much larger than the Canon G1 X.

I wish they could have done something like the fuji x 10 (?) where the lens goes from 2.0 - 2.8. I don't necessarily need 2.0 but I would have preferred a faster aperture than 5.8! I'm looking forward to the in depth reviews.

X10 has a crop factor of 4.
G1X has a crop factor of 1.9

So X10 lens is equiv f/8-f/11.2
G1X has an equiv of f/5.3-f/11

G1X wins, but it's closer than I thought.

Nice to see that it's soon to hit the shelves...sad thing is that the processor in that thing is faster than that in Pentax's DSLRs. Then again, it's also more expensive than a K-r...

Hope to hear something along the lines of a PRIME III engine soon from Pentax...

Nice upgrade for the G series and advance PnS category and hopefully it shakes up the area a bit in terms of sensor size.
However, it seems like a bit of feet dragging by Canon if this is their answer to MILC (which it may not be).

Main dislikes :
1. Slowish lens (I'd rather it be a 28-85/f2.8-4; which would work well for the enthusiast with that largish sensor)
2. Redundancy (nothing carries over once its obsolete; ILC lets a user keep the lenses and use on the new body)
3. Large sensor on something that is still mainly targeted at the layman can backfire due to less DOF (the "Why isn't all parts of the picture sharp?" syndrome)

Can't say I dislike it though. I'd even consider one it the lens was faster.

Agree, a smaller zoom range but faster lens would have been better, it would have been even more interesting if they had offered a fix lens alternative too - say somewhere around 16mm equivalent which is also offered by NEX and Fuji X100. Would have been perfect for wide-angle/landscape.

I think it's a killer for the price. I just bought a used G11 and overall like it but I was jonesing for an X10 or X100. This may be a better compromise without the sexy looks. The zoom of the X10 with the APS-C sensor and at least some kind of optical viewfinder.

And as for the slowish lens, to get a 2.8 with that range of focal lengths would make this thing would probably be bigger than a K-5 with a 16-50 just based on the physics of making a fast lens. Overall I think ti's a tempting little baby..

Hi,

Is the math to compare lenses and fstops as simple as the math above?
Is the point of the math above strictly to compare what the depth of field will look like on each camera?
I'd love to understand the math and the implications better.

If true, it certainly makes the cameras out to be very close competitors.

Thanks,
Sam

Looks like G1 X will beat K-5 in Hi-iso at least in jpegs. Will look forward to see RAW comparison at DPR full review. I still use as a point-and-shoot the old and renowned Fuji Finepix F31 and really waited for a product like G1 X since I don't want to collect another set of lenses besides my Pentax staff.
