Oly 300 f4 on Panasonic G9

---------- Post added 08-06-20 at 03:31 PM ----------

BUT, how does IQ compare to the Pany/Leica 100-400mm, especially at the long end? IF the Oly is significantly better, not well maybe just a smidge better, then it be a big seller.

Those comparisons will come for sure, the problems with the Panny are well known.its a great lens apparently while its working correctly.

I doubt there's any significance difference in terms of sharpness between the Panny and the Oly 100-400s. But the Panny does have better color, contrast, rendering, and it's a third of a pound lighter. A few months back, I did a little research on the Panny and the Oly 300 Pro as possible wildlife lenses solutions. I looked at literally hundreds of images from these two lenses, and the very best images, and the very worst images, tended to be from the Panny. It's a true art lens, but it's very temperamental. The Oly is amazingly sharp, but I didn't care for how it rendered detail. It just didn't look natural to my eyes.

So the choice will come down to personal taste, or in my case, common sense because I already own the Pany. Common sense is sometimes as annoying as growing old.

Olympus 100-400mm vs Panasonic 100-400mm – The complete comparison

Summary: Oly is sharper than the PanLeica, Oly has better IS, Oly offers a teleconverter option or two, PanLeica is smaller and lighter and slightly faster optically until the longest focal lengths.

Interesting Oly 100-400, though I'm perfectly happy with the Pana Leica. I like it for the small size and dual IS. It's sharp enough for me that I never questioned it; for my use in wildlife, fine detail is reduced by high iso noise more often than by lens performance.
