The actual focal lenght that you are going to shoot.

This question comes up even with native use of older k mount zooms. The answer varies a lot. As the previous person posted the most effective is setting out exactly to the focal length you use. That’s pretty Time consuming if you are using the zoom with frequent focal length changes. Others have advised to set to the longest or shortest length. Finally some advise to use the middle ground - picking a focal length in between the shortest and longest length. This last seems the most likely to have the least negative impact and most benefits unless you spend most of your time at one end or the other.
Thanks so much for your responses!

I was indeed hoping there was a less cumbersome solution than needing to reset the focal length compensation every time I adjusted the zoom lens.

The solutions you have both suggested are most welcome, and I will put them into use during my next photo walks. I'm particularly interested in trying out the 'middle ground' theory that you suggested, UncleVanya.

In any case, thanks again!

Pany GX8. The EXIF says 200mm actual, 400mm FF equivalent so this was taken with a Sigma 150mm macro attached via a Metabones 0.71X Ultra adapter. There is definitely a sense of long-lens compression.

Always good to have the 45-200 with me, this was a walk at noon in the local woods and I didn't expect much so the 100-400 stayed at home

If anyone is using Flashpoint or Godox flashes/strobes, Adorama has the Flashpoint R2 Pro 2.4GHz Transmitter for Panasonic & Olympus (XPro-O) on sale for $19.95. Doesn't say how long this price will be in effect. See -- https://www.adorama.com/fprrr2proo.html?EmailPrice=T&CategoryID=253685
