In the nineteenth century, Humboldt Bay was a thriving seaport, the center of a large lumber trade (mostly in redwood). Over the decades, as logging abated and alternate modes of transportation (railroad, truck) emerged, Humboldt Bay received far less traffic and its extensive docking system fell prey to the ravages of entropy.
