The truth is even more fantastic than you might realize! I actually looked into that a while back, all of the stones are held together by gravity alone like a house of cards. Makes you think when walking inside a cathedral knowing the roof is held together with nothing but gravity. The pic is from the Turku castle in Finland built in the 13th century. Here's a shot of the miniature model that shows how the bricks were laid for the roofs. The final phase was to remove the wooden supports from under the stones.
For certain, it is not a construction method to use in an earthquake-prone region.

Totally disorienting for this easterner to see the sun setting over an ocean horizon.

"like stout Cortez when with eagle eyes, He star'd at the Pacific..."

Great picture.

Sorry UncleVanya, missed your question when commenting on something else. The museum is the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, CT. Not a huge place, but many interesting and some very high quality pieces.

Here's another one of the grand rooms at the Wadsworth Atheneum. The statue is a Venus.

I'll eventually post at least one other view of that statue, from down in the room, but I'll probably eliminate background with PP before posting as I like to do with many museum subjects that I post.

Oh absolutely. My comment was that the setting is lovely. I really like what you've shown us a gem of a museum.

That second image is really cute. One of those "sure hope I hit the shutter release at the right instant" images.

Obviously everyone agrees which tree to sit under out in the Namib. Did you spot the little hawk in the first image? The second image is a deep crop from the same file as the first image, IQ isn't incredible, but not to bad for such a tiny sensor.
