We will soon see threads on how to remove anti-alias filter from D800 to make it D800E (& save $300)

I bet you that the price gap will drop eventually...but in any case, imagine if Pentax count make a camera like this a reality!

Wow, amazing camera indeed..

It will be interesting to see Canonīs response with their 5D mk III. Will it have even more megapixels or are they taking another route? Add to this the rumoured Sony FF cameras and there will be real competition in the FF field. This might lead to lower prices...

I just wish that Pentax would wake up from their slumber and enter this game as well...

Man I have been looking at FF for landscapes here in S.E. Asia.. There are views here that take my breath away. I am going to take a deep breath and wait for 5D mk lll. But it is going to be harrrrrrd to beat the Nikon... My gosh.. What an engineering marvel!!!!!!!.

While I'd agree that the price certainly seems impressive, the main issue with cost remains the same for me. And that is with cost of ownership. For example... I was able to built two working kits with K-5's for less than the cost of a single working D700 covering the same focal lengths. Aside from this the K-5 turned-out to be a far better field camera due to it's size whereas the D700 turned-out to be quite heavy over the course of a day in this regard.

Having said all that... the idea of more MP certainly seems appealing for landscape photography. Then again.... the new upcoming Olympus might prove to be a worthy competitor in this area also. Time will tell I suppose, though all these market choices sure do make things exciting for us gadget junkies!

Same here!
But something tells me that Canon may come back fighting on this one.
And lets not forget Sony.
Whatever the case, it's going to be one interesting year for the FF segment!

Awesome camera, great bang for buck.

The only modest downside is file sizes, but that comes with the territory:

If I am not mistaken 16 bit color transfer is kinda unusual for this also. 14bit per channel color processors use 16384 bits per channel. Now with 16 bit you will see 65536 bits per channel. That is one hell of a big jump in color transition or different color values used by each pixel... So for landscape it should be creamy smooth colors. And more important better post processing. If? I am reading the spec's right.

14-bit analog-to-digital conversion and 16-bit EXPEED 3 digital image processing? I assume 14 bit conversion then over to 16 bit processing... what the hell.

It's an impressive looking camera to be sure, especially for landscape shooters. Still too large and too expensive for my purposes (I don't really shoot landscapes, especially not of the sort that requires that much oomph, lol). I covet several Nikon lenses, like the 24 f/1.4, but if I bought those plus the camera I really would be entering into medium format price territory

Interesting that it switches to 4 FPS in full resolution mood, 9 when you drop it down to 16 mp. Also cool idea to have a no AA model. I applaud them for trying some new things. I think that camera will sell very well.

The best news to me for the people who don't buy it is how this will hopefully pressure the rest of the market below it, which can only benefit all photographers. For example, if the prices of the still very good D700 were to drop, that would put pressure on the sub $2,000 market.

You all just love it for its looks! If it were a brick you'd be panning it

Seriously though, amazing specs but it still costs $3k

Wow great price for the specs.

I was looking around to purchase an used Canon 5D to leverage my FF lenses but with the release of the D800, an used D700 might be a great bargain. I mean if the D800 is priced at $3200 brand new, then the D700 should be found around $1200-$1500 used, right?

Maybe eventually. I'd imagine it will hover more toward the $2,000 range this year. Nikon D3's still are selling in the $3,000 range even after all this new stuff has been released.

I wouldn't expect the D700 to be in the $1200-1500 range for quite some time, even with the release of the D800. Obviously I could be wrong, but I would expect the value of an excellent condition used D700 to drop about 20% over the next year, from a range of about $2000-2200 to a range of about $1600-1800. No idea what the price of a new D700 will be, assuming they contiune to produce and sell them along side the D800. I think it's currently $2700, so perhaps it would drop a little bit to something closer to $2200-2400(?).

If your prediction is right then an used D700 is still over my budget

I guess the Canon 5D is my only option for sub $900 budget for a FF camera. In fact, I missed a great deal on the 5D last week, CAD$700 with original box and only 25K clicks...
