Nikon D800 - Amazing price!

Damn, it's already up for pre order...and look at that price! Tempting to say the least, even for me...

I agree, that's a great price. I wonder what it will do to D700 prices, too.

This is going to spark some switchers from here, wonder how long before we see the first "I'm selling my K-5 and switching to a D800" thread?

I think it will depend on the the high-ISO IQ from the sensor. However, I imagine the IQ will be excellent (which is to say on par with the older, but much lower pixel density D700). If that's the case, I would expect to see a little softening in the used D700 market, something on the order of a 20% drop over the next few months.

The price is amazing... and a big surprise! I'm not one to run round the forum saying "if Pentax doesn't do (whatever) I'm switching brands" but DAMN!

Pentax really is going to have to do something pretty impressive some time soon or prepare to loose some loyal followers.

Wow. I'm sure it's beautiful, but I must have woke up on the wrong side of the economy again.

This just keeps happening, though.

But is it pocketable?

Seriously, the price is ok....I think it only looks attractive because people thought it was going to be higher. I think you will see another FF model from another manufacturer with that same sensor for $700-900 less withing the next 3-6 months.

Further reading reveals there are two D800 models.

One is the standard D800 which is at $2999 at Amazon via pre-order (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0076AYNXM/ ) and the other is the D800E (no anti aliasing filter) for $3299 at Amazon via pre-order (Amazon.com: Nikon D800E 36.3 MP CMOS FX-Format Digital SLR Camera (Body Only): Camera & Photo )

Interesting.

I'm not selling my K-5 but gonna save up for a DFA 100 or tammy 90 once I get that, savings fund for this beast is gonna get started. So in a year and a half, k-5 should be obsolete by then, this should be cheap by then and funds should be ready by then

Full frame continues its trajectory into the high quality specialist camera range. APS-C taking over semi pro. M4/3 holding its own still due to size. Medium format = ?
