A similar thing has been going on in µ43 land, where a current 16MP sensor has a similar pixel pitch as the D800. A good article, as always, appears on TOP: The Online Photographer: Big Prints From 4/3-Format Sensors

It gets good right around "The 'Higher Expectations' factor", and takes a little extrapolating to arrive where I want to go:

The "rule of thumb", 1/focal length, should be modified to account for pixel pitch and viewing size.

The guide Nikon published is indeed intended to get in front of newbies buying the camera, shooting handheld telephoto at 1/50s, pixel-peeping the results and thinking there's something wrong with the camera

A very interesting link, displaying the benefits of straight downsampling. See also: -----> Discussion: d800 vs d700 iso 200-25600 comparison

I remain sceptical. Even if technology has marched on a lot, it's a big challenge cramming all those extra pixels in, even into a FF sensor.
The pixels are no more "crammed" in than the K-5 or D7000. Are you concerned about the pixel density on those latter two cameras too?

A pretty good portrait, took the liberty of downloading, desaturating and cropping. Original can be found here. (Photographer : SHINJI WATANABE)

Some of the first user snapshots are appearing now as folks take delivery of their cameras..

Looks like a really great camera with great sensor. I would love to see similar one in M10.

Falk, I was going to link this in the 36MP club thread, but figured it would be too big and make you mad , but I think it deserves a look at this size.

I think the D800 is going to teach us a bit about the human epidermis.

I don't know about other people who are viewing this(monitor variances) but this image at the size posted isn't coming across very well. If I had to guess, I'd say it is likely screen artifacts caused by resizing but I'm not 100% certain that's the problem.,

jsherman999, please, delete your embedded image, it is too big in any thread. I did the same mistake in the 36MP club thread and was told so.

Unfortunately, this site's forum software does not do server-side rescale for embedded scaled images (IMGWIDE). So, it is the browser which does the rescale. Which is both ugly-looking and painfully slow for many users.

I created a thumbnail (attached) for you to link to the original image. I did the downsampling and color-corrected the image too. It was completely off. You are invited to post it in the 36MP thread. I think it is a bit OT here.

OTOH, I've now seen many images of this quality, it's just normal with the D800. This is why I showed my street candid shot. It's not a studio shot and still the same "wow" quality.
