D700 remains in production, inaddition to both D800

I see Nikon will continue producing D700, as neither D800 are replacements for it, "as long as theres demand."
If Nikon drops D700 price to current 5D MarkII levels I'd guess demand will remain for the old 12mp fx workhorse at lets say $2,000 or so.
I've read the same is true for the pair of 5D Mark III set to announce in a couple weeks, according to current rumor, they will not replace 5D II just add a couple more full frames to their 2012 system.

Great idea- Pentax should do this as well with the K-5 when its successor is announced. Instant mid-range model!

The D700 will be unlike any other in the Nikon range now. Since the D800, non built in grip size model will now be 36MP. Seems like a good idea on their part to continue to cater to those wanting to upgrade to FF, but not wanting to go 36MP or $3000.

D700 set to shed $500 off current $2,699 list in US:

D700 may be $2,199 next week till it falls off the system.

$500 price reduction for the Nikon D700 in the US next month | Nikon Rumors

I'm considering adding a 2nd brand new D700 and skipping both rumored 5D III $3,500 plus and D800 at $3,000. Canon's got a little crazy on their new lens pricing, like 24-70 2.8 II at $2300, so its a good thing I built out my Nikon lens system while waiting out the Canikon 4 year full frame upgrade cycle.

I am happy I picked up the 5D Mark II for $1,999 with $740 in free B&H goodies included a week prior to Christmas 2011.
5D Mark II is pretty sweet, works real well with my Eos glass, still though it's not a D700, which remains the very best camera I've owned. So much so that adding another D700 seems the best choice.

Edit:

Thom has added his thoughts on February 25th 2012 concerning $2199 with "no MAP" pricing.
He expects D700 to drop below $2,000 new.

I am certain I'll buy a 2nd D700, hopefully from B&H for $1,999 before Summer.

2012 will become known as year of $1999 Full Frame Dslr

Great selection this year for $1,999 full frame consumers as Canon is now rumored to price drop 5D Mark II to $1999 to counter Nikon D700 at $2,199 or less:

And it begins. Looks like prices are beginning to drop for the D700. B&H now have $2,199.95 for body only:

D700 @ B&H

I'm sure others will follow with price drops. The used market will be interesting...
