Guys, relax. My HTC HD2 with 5mp camera came with some sample pictures on it too. (In fact, most phones do.) And guess what, they're utterly breathtaking. But did I ever manage to take the same quality pictures with it? LOL! Of course not. I'm almost 100% sure, you all have such breathtaking sample images on your phones.

How the what-now can they get this kind of shallow depth of field with an 8 mm lens?

We're already to the point where around 20% of respondents in the US indicate that they own no other camera than the one in their phone and see no reason to purchase one. The 808 will only accelerate the process of converting people to only camera phones. While the pics under ideal conditions are amazing (and oh, the great photos in my phone only look good on the tiny screen - when I tried to view them on my 23in screen they looked terrible - unlike these from the new 808) but the real telling images IMHO are those from the video at night. This is a big step forward in many ways for camera phones and a real threat to P&S cameras.

It's not digital zoom, it's kind of the opposite of digital zoom -- when you're fully "zoomed out", you're using the full 41 MP of resolution, which is then downsampled to (for instance) 5MP. As you zoom further in, eventually you end up with just 5 megapixels, straight up, without downsampling. At this point, it follows that the quality will be significantly worse on a pixel level. So in that sense, their claim of "lossless zoom" is a marketing lie.

So it's exactly like digital zoom, only worse.

No. They put everything onto the table.

They acknowledge that a 3.3x crop f/2.8 (which is a 35mm f/9.2 equivalent!) is only fast enough for a typical resolution of 5MP (in terms of ISO capabilities).

This is a fair and honest statement. Of course, in full daylight, you have the full resolution as a bonus (although the pixel rendition is not the same as e.g., a 645D would deliver).

So, what you do indeed get is a 26-78mm (35mm equivalent) f/2.8-8.4 (unscaled) variable zoom.

Ok, true variable zooms don't loose this much light at the long end. But the idea is still compelling, considering that smart phone haven't had enough space to accomodate an optical zoom lens.

They are also likely to incorporate this sensor tech into a Windows Phone later this year. They'll have to wait for the major release of WP8 (Apollo), since the current OS won't support it.

There's no "technology" there, PureView is just a made-up marketing word. If you take your K-5's 16MP images and crop them to your desired field-of-view in Photoshop, and then resize the resulting picture to 5 megapixels -- boom! You just implemented PureView on your Pentax!

The sensor itself is pretty amazing, with 41 megapixels in such a small area, but that has nothing to do with what they call "PureView technology".
