Concert Footage from Nokia 808 Pureview

A taste of the 808's video capabilities in a very challenging environment: Netherlands, HobNob Pop Festival, "My Hero" by the 'Foo Fighters - Stacked Actors' on 7 July 2012.

Nokia should get out of the smartphone business were they are setting all time loss records and build cameras since people are only interested in the 808 camera. They could build a camera the size of the Pentax Q with that sensor since the Sony DSC RX100 has a larger 1" sensor and is not much larger than the Q. Or come out with a camera phone with no monthly data plan and no smartphone OS.

More than the video, check out the sound quality. It's a Foo Fighters cover band called Stacked Actors.

I'm still not getting this kind of complaints.

My 808 is said to be shipping next week (let's see how this works out) and of course, a data plan isn't required to use the camera and the OS beats any camera firmware by a margin, I am pretty sure.

I am getting this as a camera alone, when an SLR or mirrorless is too big to carry around.

BTW, the 808 probably cannot be converted into a system camera. There are only a few millimeters of space between lens and sensor and the mounting of the lens in factory is done with µm precision using live image feedback from the lens/sensor combo while it is mounted, in factory! Moreover, the lens is one group, 5 elements, all aspherical with no air in between. This can't be a zoom. So, it would be hard to sell it as a P&S camera.

The only weak points I see is a lack of camera control like full manual. I hope that'll be resolved though.

Here in the US this is a smartphone with the worst OS of all smartphones that is only available with a data plan. My Microsoft/Sharp/Verizon Kin Twom phone is the only phone with 8mp camera ,720p HD video and Wi-Fi that is a feature phone with no monthly data contract. It was free with the Verizon family plan that my wife pays for since she makes 99% of the calls. My Panasonic DMC-ZS20 is the smallest of all pocket size 20x (24-480mm eqiv) superzoom cameras and shoots 1080p60 HD video for great slow motion with audio on replays.I shoot HD video much more than stills and the 808 does not have 1080p60.

I have no idea what phone/data plans cost in the US precisely, but it does seem that many people there are "educated" into thinking that an iPhone actually costs $200.

I prefer to buy phones unlocked from 3rd parties, and then pay a lower monthly fee to the carrier of my choice. Currently I pay a mere US$26 a month for 2,400 minutes and "unlimited" data which includes tethering (in reality, fast up until 5GB, throttled thereafter). But its a lot cheaper to put the infrastructure into a place like HK compared to the US!

I pay 13 usd per month for 1.5 GB fast 3 G data and1800 minutes local and long distance calls and1000 national texts. India has some of the lowest call rates in the world.

Indeed. Those rates put Australian carriers to shame.

And just about every US carrier will still force you to buy a data plan.

Even if you have an existing handset and plan? I would just swap the SIM over from one phone to the other.

If you use a smartphone, yes, they will tack on a data plan. Swapping the SIM won't matter, they can tell from the IMEI if it's a smartphone or not.

I just installed new version of CameraPro app on my N8. It is said to support the 808 PureView as well. I can't obviously tell to what extent, but still WOW that was quick.

I know that the common wisdom says the Symbian is dead, but the number of new apps being born and old apps being updated is still good. I suspect lots of them are ported from MeeGo.

That shouldn't matter.

First, the 808 camera obviously doesn't need a SIM card to work. At least, I would guess so.

Second, I have an iPhone and got two additional SIM cards with it. They fit everywhere, Smartphones and iPad included. Any phone which isn't locked. That's the meaning of unlocked ...
