They're talking about a data plan charged by a carrier. The carrier charges more if the sim card is inserted in a smart phone.

Weird.

There's nothing like that in Australia. I can swap my SIM into any handset I like. Although it obviously makes more sense to get a generous data plan if you use a smartphone, you dont need to. The data plan is independent of the handset.

First, the 808 camera obviously doesn't need a SIM card to work. At least, I would guess so.

Second, I have an iPhone and got two additional SIM cards with it. They fit everywhere, Smartphones and iPad included. Any phone which isn't locked. That's the meaning of unlocked ...
Yep that's the way it works, as long as the sim is active you can swap it between any unlocked phone
the IMEI registration is tied to locked phones, I always have my phone unlocked so when I spend a couple of weeks in Europe I can grab a local card and save a ton of money over the rates i'd pay roaming

Knock yourselves out then. Just don't complain when a U.S. carrier nails for a data plan you didn't want....

It sounded horrendously complicated to set up that studio shot, but the results are impressive.

However I think PhaseOne, 645D, D600E etc need not be too worried.

I wonder btw why the 808 doesn't have a RAW option. Given the photo-centric design and all the other advanced features, they probably could easily have included RAW.

You name it. And then:
  • 3:2 format option.
  • manual shutter speed (they already have exposure compensation with live histogram though, and manual ISO).
  • pre-flash to be turned off with manual flash power.
  • manual focus (they have a hyperfocal mode though).
  • and DNG output, you're right.
The camera is great as it is, but there are no strong reasons why they left out the above. It would be ok to have it in an API, the camera APPs will use it.

The studio setup was tricky to figure out. But now that I know it, it is actually quick and hazzle-free. My description was a bit verbose to give others a chance too.

You haven't got a clue. I recently moved back to the US. Walked into T-mobile, got a calling plan without data, no issue, for my N8. Walked into ATT, when a better deal came up, had a non-data plan, but later switched to a data one.

In Europe, I used my N8 without data, as I was on a prepaid plan and had Wifi nearly everywhere I was.

Unfortunately, not available for 808 PV.
Although, 808PV remains king of the block for anything smaller than an RX100m2.
