Nikon responds to Sony A99 with D600 FF camera!

Another full frame DSLR on the horizon: Nikon D600

Apparently the topic of a D700 replacement has come-up numerous times with Nikon representatives since the D800 was introduced as a new category of camera's. However, there are now rumors of a new, cheaper full frame DSLR camera from Nikon that will be called D600.

So without further ado, here are some specs to fill-in the void:
  • Unknown MP count at that point
  • The new camera will be marketed as an entry level full frame camera
  • Auto DX crop mode
  • Dual SD card slots
  • In-camera RAW editor
  • Built in time-lapse functionality
  • There will be no build-in HDR feature
  • Possible integrated GPS
  • New external battery grip
  • To be released this summer
TBH, if this turns-out to be true, then I'm going to go with something along the lines of Nikon responding to the threat of Sony's low cost FF due to be announced this summer.

Time will tell, though as always, it should prove to be one heck of a year on the FF competition front! - Now if only Canon could sweeten the pot with an affordable FF solution of their own.

Nikon is on the ball!

Run it on 4 AA batts and put in the 'in camera' HDR and it could be a great cam if priced right.

If it's weathersealed and Pentax does not have an equivalent - I am going to Nikon.

Nikonrumors only gives it a 40% chance of being real.

Same here - was already looking to go with nikon to get the more tasty 3rd party offerings, this just makes it more exciting even if it is only a rumor at the moment...

+1

And without knowing MP count and which sensor generation and especially price, it's pretty vaporous right now. (But... $1800, 18MP-24MP would be pretty sweet.)

This is why Pentax needs to get on the ball. A lot of our best contributors want to leave the brand. How many already have? Personally I am content with APS-C at the moment, but many photographers move on after awhile and we lose veteran members to other brands.

Great marketing move by Nikon. Bring out the higher end body first and scoop up all those pre-orders and sales. Then launch the lesser camera that a lot of users might have bought instead of the higher priced D800 if given the choice. This year is going to be a huge for Nikon. Canon is toast. Pentax will soon be just burnt crumbs from that toast if they don't act soon.

With the D800 on backorder until the next ice-age, plenty of time to cancel and go with this still

Yep! Nikon are playing an excellent game this year they are out for the kill!
I think it will be 24mp rather than the 16~18mp sensor, that way it will take away 5D sales.

ha! I don't think this is going to happen unless they are really getting into a price war with the 'rumored' Sony A99. This will kill their own D7000. Nikon doesn't need to get any more FF customers on a lower margin. They can hardly meet the mad rush for the D800.

I already sold everything Pentax and waiting for the successor of the D7000, but if that comes true it may change my plans

Well... theres a very unclear line between the D300s and D7000. They basically sitting in the same spot there on different matters.
Nikon may pull a "D90" move and let the D7000 stay where it is... There might not be a D300s replacement, instead a D8000. Who knows.

The Thailand flood and Japan earthquake last year and its affect on Nikon certainly has made them more hungry for success and going for a no holds barred approach.

If D600 is true, I'd expect it to be some sort of down spec'ed D700, probably sitting at the $1600-$1800 mark.
