Near the house is a grove of cycads that have just regrown their fronds after the bushfire earlier in the year. Makes for an interesting shot series:

While common enough in this region these are somewhat rare having no real spines:
"There are only two living species of Lepidozamia. Both of them are restricted to Australia. Lepidozamia hopei is a forest dweller from the Wet Tropics of Queensland. Growing to a height of 20m, it is probably the tallest cycad in the world." A Snail's Eye View: Cycads R Us

Has anyone here taken the plunge and got the Mark 2 version?

Indeed I have - my pics are upthread - I didn't get the original one. It's a decent camera, very sharp with reasonable dynamic range - it certainly won't beat my D800s but is useful to have in a pocket.

Tried out a little RX100 mk1 at the weekend.... quite pleased with the results for landscape snaps. It's giving me cause to consider whether to keep it instead of my NEX set up... difficult one, as I quite like using manual lenses on the NEX; but as a travel camera, the RX makes a lot of sense.

So what I would like to ask Sony users is - would the 16-50 pancake on an NEX offer similar/better quality while being 'pocketable'?

Not if I was the one using it. Actually, the RX100 is much more pocketable than the NEX with the 16-50. The 16-50 still requires a loose pocket or a jacket pocket. The RX100 seems to have a superior sweep panorama, as I've seen from Twitch's results. Perhaps that's changed in the latest cameras.

Actually I find the RX100 a shade TOO small... the NEX with 16-50 is at the larger end of 'pocketable', but acceptable. Gah now I think of it, the MX1 is about the perfect size for me, such shame the sensor isn't 1" ;P

Oh yeah the sweep panorama is superb isn't it?

It certainly wouldn't fit in a tight pocket, but if you're ok with it then it should be fine. The image quality is at its best 20mm+, but it's certainly good enough. I am a bit envious of RX100 owners though. I actually want to sell my wife's Q and get her an RX100, for me to play with, but the Q is doing quite well by her.

The RX100 is, in my opinion, only just truly pocketable. Any thicker and it wouldn't be. NEX w/ 16-50 would be a nice light small option, but not anywhere near jeans pocketable. Well over a year after the release of the RX100 it has only been surpassed in it's category by one other camera, the RX100M2.

The RX100 won't comfortably fit in a tight pocket either (and I'm too scared of scratching it in my jeans pocket, since I'm undecided about keeping it). It's a tough one. If the 16-50 fit my NEX-3 the choice would be simple... I'd just get the lens. Something like an NEX-3N with 16-50 would cost a little less than the RX100, but while I appreciate the ability to use manual lenses on it, the simplicity of a little pocket camera like the RX100 also appeals.

I'm getting to like using the RX100 more now I have worked out how to set it up. I use it in Av mode so I have the front ring set to ISO and the rear dial of course defaults to f-stop.

Can I program the ? button to do something more useful?

For what it's worth, I don't think the 16-50 works well on my 5N. It works well on my 6. Perhaps the firmware of the body doesn't support the AF properly or maybe it's just me. You might want to buy the lens packaged with a newer camera. I am constantly tempted by the RX100, holding it in my hands didn't help. It is a very well built camera.

I'll make it harder for you - the mk II is superb. It doesn't have the DR of my D800/e, but the RAW files have bags of detail. It does mean that on less than great weather days where before I have not taken a camera with me, I now have something of good enough quality to produce images that can be printed pretty large. It's a great camera. I'd like it more with a viewfinder but don't want to pay the sums that Sony are asking for it.

Glorious shots (although I'd like to see the colour versions!)

Well it looks like the RX100 stays, I think, cos I'm going on holiday tomorrow and am not sure I can actually fit my K30 or NEX + a plethora of lenses into my hand luggage.
