yeah but with 3 or 4 different Zeiss lenses would be even better.

Wow. Full-frame power--in your pocket?

We're going to see image quality that is simply unimaginable for a compact camera. Leica's gonna squirm...

The X100 was pretty successful and Leica has put a second X camera out with an APS-C sensor at $2000. I think there is a market for such products and Sony is tapping it.

I think it will only fit in large pockets. Both literally and figuratively.

I get the idea of a FF pocket camera, just I do not get how Sony did it. No wheel or anything to change shutterspeeds quickly. And scene mode on a $2800 specilist camera? What were they thinking?

As for the scene modes, they are actually nice to have on the RX100. The "twilight" in particular is very functional. "Illustration" can be used for some interesting results as well. In camera HDR, while not new is better than the Pentax implementation on the K5, it can be very subtle.

I suspect I'm in the 1% niche for whom this will be a practical cam rather than a fashion accessory, but goddamn I want it...

I've spent the last 18 months shooting almost solely with my Nokton 25mm on a GH2, and I prefer the 35mm field of view, so the single lens is a + for me. I spend much of my photography time hiking and backpacking, so a palm-sized cam that weighs less than my GH2 body is fantastic (check the DPR video - gives a good perspective on just how small it really is...). I mainly shoot landscape and street/travel, so the quality from a matched Zeiss lens/Sony full-frame chip all in the RX1 form-factor is just, well, drool worthy

For me, it'll depend on a few factors whether I buy:

- IQ - a matched lens/sensor and $3000 has to be bloody amazing, its the only reason the RX1 has to exist.
- AF speed - It's got to be as quick or close to as quick as the OMD/GH2 (SAF, I couldn't care less about CAF). CDAF has come a long way...
- MF feel - focus-by-wire can be done well or it can be done badly. I'd like it to be more like the m.ZD 75/f1.8 than the Fuji X100...
- General tacticality - this is why I decided not to get a Fuji XP-1 and 35/f1.4 - the IQ might have been steller but it felt like a toy.
- User-interface - I don't like my cameras to get in the way... The main reason I sold my X100.
- Affordable VF option - the Voigtlander 35mm optical finder might be nice, or a Sony EVF, but I'm not paying another $600...

I would be very surprised if the AF was slower than the NEX-5N especially in low light, given the full-frame sensor and fast f/2 lens.

People who mainly shoot zooms and buy a camera with the basis that has to handle every contingency plus maximize the value for their money will never understand a fixed lens camera.

This camera could literally handle 75% of the shooting i do It's just not in the stars for me...I would literally have to luiquidate all my gear to obtain this, which is way to steep for me.

Meh. I've had full-frame in my pocket for many years. No news here.

Keep in mind that digital sensors are much harsher on lenses than film. Digital images are subject to pixel peeping and are often expected to be sharp at the pixel level. Chromatic aberration and lens flare tend to have a greater effect on digital than on film. A camera of this caliber is expected to have a lens worthy of the Carl Zeiss name, and as such needs to be able to fully resolve a 24-megapixel sensor and have a fast aperture.
