Metering system not gimped, and nice to have movable LCD screen, but no info to make it a k-30 contender...

The D5200 is about checking boxes that make people think it is a great camera -- iso 25,000; 24 megapixels, 5 fps. Probably will have underwhelming specs in other areas, forcing people to upgrade to newer (hopefully full frame, from Nikon's standpoint) options.

Considering a lot of people only look at MP, apparently it has already beaten Pentax.

Nex 7's 24mp is impressive (in D3200 the same sensor has underwhelming performance). For when a Pentax camera with the same sensor? I'm sure Pentax engineers will make that sensor shine.

Can they put the same effort into their autofocus system that they put into making the sensor shine?

Has it been confirmed that the D3200 has the same sensor? There was some arguments here a few months ago.

It looks to be different from the Sony built 24MP sensor - the D3200 uses the Nikon NC81369R chip, according to Chipworks.

Also according to Chipworks, the Sony A77 and NEX-7 use the Sony IMX096AQL 24MP sensor.

So the Sony and Nikon 24MP APS-C sensors SEEM to be different. But their dxomark.com scores (eg in the D3200 and NEX-7) are virtually identical...

The fact that the sensors have different names doesn't necessarily exclude the possibility that they are basically the same. Perhaps the names refer to what various camera makers make of the same 'raw' sensor. Anyway, I hope Pentax gets something like what's in Nex 7. That sensor is fantastic.

It is a different sensor with a different pixel pitch.

You're right... D3200's sensor is just a bit smaller: 15.4 x 23.2 vs. 15.6 x 23.5 in Nex 7.
But I doubt this tiny difference can account for the obvious difference in IQ between the two cameras.

The space between "pixels" is smaller as well. It is a different sensor, but even if spacing was identical it could still be different. Pentax is using a different 16MP sensor in the K-5 than they are in the K-30/K-01 (Per Adam from his Pentax interview).

Right now I would expect that Pentax will use a sensor with more than 24MP. Sony makes the OM-D sensor ans that scales to 27MP in APS-C. A new NEX-7 should be out this Spring with a new sensor and it might be something totally different.

Thom Hogan has this to say about the D3200 sensor (ref. http://bythom.com/nikond3200review.htm):

...let's jump right to the big internal change: a 24mp Nikon-made DX sensor. A lot of folk were expecting Nikon to use the Sony 24mp sensor, and indeed when the first tests started to appear the fact that it tested pretty much like the Sony 24mp APS sensor made a lot of people think that the D3200 used a Sony sensor. It doesn't. The sensor inside is clearly packaged differently, and it's now been verified that it is a Nikon made sensor, right down to the internal etchings on the silicon itself.

It's quite possible that there is intellectual property licensing going on between Nikon and Sony. There are a few too many commonalities amongst the two sensors for them to be a coincidence, but I don't think that's particularly important. That's because the D3200's sensor is as good as it gets for high megapixel count in the DX/APS size (at least to date as I write this). The quantum efficiency is a small bit lower than the Sony sensor, but the well saturation is a small bit higher (it's the near identical read noise that implies similar design)

For a new buyer who does not have any lenses, D5200 is clearly superior to k-5 II - both in terms of sensor as well as AF, especially when priced same.

...how...wha...? Where do you even get the AF info? If it's the same as the D3200 (which is the same as the D5100), then it's not going to be superior. At all.

And the sensor..? The D3200's sensor performs worse in noise and dynamic range. It has more resolution, but that's it.

And the D5200 has to compete with the k-30, not the k-5II. Completely different class there...
